While his early work showed promise and a love for classic comedies, it was The Squid and the Whale that truly defined his style. He began using personal, often difficult, experiences to create comedies that are both sharp and surprisingly tender.

For a job that awful, you need someone incredibly likable and unassuming – someone who can deliver terrible news with a gentle, reassuring presence.
