This family is deeply dysfunctional. The father, Martin, actively pits his twin sons against each other, even encouraging physical fights over things like an iPad. His son, Nile, describes him as a harsh, demanding patriarch – a bit like Logan Roy – who seems to enjoy making his children uncomfortable. While Nile wants to leave a lasting mark on New York City with his buildings, Martin’s sole focus is on having as many children as possible who carry the family name. Nile shares a disturbing story about their mother, who suffered a dozen miscarriages and nearly died during her first pregnancy. Doctors advised her to stop having children, but Martin refused, and wouldn’t consider adoption. She ultimately had five more miscarriages before Nile was born and later died of ovarian cancer. When Nile decided he didn’t want children of his own, Martin remarried and used IVF to have twins with his new wife.

I just finished watching Death by Lightning, and wow, it really paints a picture of how messed up America was even before the assassination of President Garfield. It’s 1880, and the Republican party is run by these… well, let’s just say they weren’t the brightest bulbs, and they got their power by controlling the ports of New York. It’s heartbreaking to see that Black soldiers who fought for the Union still weren’t getting the rights they deserved, and there was so much unrest with labor disputes and a real sense that nobody knew what America was supposed to be. The movie introduces us to James Garfield, this Ohio congressman and war hero who unexpectedly becomes president after giving one great speech. And then there’s Charles Guiteau, a total failure as a lawyer and publisher, who’s somehow inspired by Garfield’s success to chase after his own version of greatness – it’s a really unsettling setup.

I’m completely hooked on Celebrity Traitors! It’s such a fun twist on the original – instead of regular people, it’s packed with famous faces like Stephen Fry, Paloma Faith, and Jonathan Ross all trying to deceive each other. What I especially love is that the winner doesn’t keep the prize money for themselves; they get to donate it to a charity of their choice! But even with all the celebrities, it still has that same thrilling core concept of Faithfuls trying to figure out who the Traitors are, and Claudia Winkleman is just brilliant as the host, as always.
