Key Huy Quan estimates that it has been around twenty years since he last shared a room with most of his “The Goonies” cast members. On the other hand, Corey Feldman believes it was closer to four decades ago, referring to their encounter at the movie’s Los Angeles premiere back in 1985.
In a heartwarming turn of events, I was blessed to reunite with my “Goonies” family earlier today. The TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood played host to this special gathering, as Feldman, Josh Brolin, Kerri Green, Jeff Cohen, and director Chris Columbus were all present at my hand-and-footprint ceremony. As I walked the red carpet for the premiere of my latest action flick, “Love Hurts,” I couldn’t help but share my excitement about this magical reunion.
The cast had a virtual fundraising reunion on Zoom during the COVID pandemic.
Quan often gets questioned about the possibility of a “Goonies” sequel, and he admitted that it’s one of the most common queries in his life. He expressed his strong desire for such an event to occur.
Feldman shared with me that approximately ten years ago, he and his co-star Sean Astin had been working on a sequel concept. They presented this idea to director Richard Donner and various team members from Amblin and Columbus productions. According to Feldman, “Sean and I put in a lot of effort into this, and it was an exceptional concept.
Despite showing enthusiasm for the project, Donner decided against participating as he felt it was financially burdensome.
Feldman remarked, ‘Since this is a follow-up to ‘The Goonies,’ it must be costly, isn’t it?’ He replied, ‘I want to keep it low-key and focus on the characters – making it more of a story about where they are now. It’ll be about these people.’ I agreed, ‘Alright then. Well, if you’re the director, you call the shots.’ This means you, Dick.
Similar to Quan, Feldman expresses readiness for a sequel now. “All I can suggest is gathering everyone,” he stated. “Everyone seems to be in great shape. Sean’s doing well. Josh is doing well. We’re all holding up. The Goonies never give up…There’s optimism.
The movie ‘Love Hurts’ essentially brings together the cast of ‘The Goonies’ again, as Astin and Quan star in it together.”
“In essence, ‘Love Hurts’ is a reunion project for ‘The Goonies’, with both Astin and Quan featuring in the film.”
Or more colloquially:
“‘Love Hurts’ is like a mini ‘Goonies’ reunion, as Astin and Quan are in it together!
