This year’s Berlin Film Festival juror, Nabil Ayouch, is preparing for his first film in the French language. It will be a gripping and provocative psychological thriller with an erotic edge, featuring lead actresses Virginie Efira and Maryam Touzani.
This year at the Cannes Film Festival, the filmmaker and producer of Moroccan-French descent unveiled his latest production, titled “Everybody Loves Touda.” Notably, this film represented Morocco’s submission for the Oscars. Among his most recognized works are “Casablanca Beats,” which was screened at Cannes in 2021, and the highly praised “Much Loved.
In the upcoming fourth quarter of this year, Ayouch will collaborate with Efira, a prominent French actress known for her box-office success, on his next production. The specifics of the movie’s storyline are being kept secret, but Ayouch has revealed that Efira will portray a woman who adopts a child in Morocco. This film appears to tackle themes related to adoption and the ethical dilemmas faced by a couple.
Ayouch will work on a movie that takes place in Morocco, but it will be filmed in French. This project reunites him with his wife, Touzani, who starred in “Razzia” and has collaborated with him as both director and co-screenwriter. Most recently, Touzani directed “The Blue Caftan,” a drama that explores the complex relationship between a man hiding his sexuality and his wife. This film premiered at Cannes in 2022 and won the Fipresci prize, becoming the highest-grossing Moroccan film overseas in recent years.
In the same vein as his past productions, Ayouch’s upcoming film will incorporate a feminist perspective and boast a powerful suspenseful aspect, while also provoking deep thought, according to Ayouch himself.
Ayouch’s production house, Ali n’Productions, in collaboration with Les Films du Nouveau Monde, is in the process of creating this movie. They are also actively seeking out possible co-producers for the project.
