“Carry-On” has entered Netflix’s most popular English-language films list.
The action-packed thriller climbed up to the fifth position on Tuesday, boasting a total of 149.5 million views since its debut a month ago, as per the streaming service’s report. Currently, “Red Notice” sits atop the chart, with “Don’t Look Up,” “The Adam Project,” “Bird Box,” and “Carry-On” trailing closely behind in that order.
Jaume Collet-Serra shared with me on Tuesday morning that he values the responses of viewers towards his film more than just the box office numbers. He’s been receiving numerous calls and messages from friends and people unaware of his directing role. Only after seeing the credits did they realize and express their appreciation for the movie. In that moment, Collet-Serra felt confident that the film was reaching its audience and resonating with them.
In this thriller, Taron Egerton, an Oscar nominee, plays a TSA agent at LAX who is coerced by a secretive traveler, played by Jason Bateman, to let potentially dangerous luggage containing chemical weapons onto a flight headed for New York City. Sofia Carson joins the cast as Egerton’s pregnant fiancée, while Danielle Deadwyler, Theo Rossi, Dean Norris and Tonatiuh add depth to the storyline.

The film, produced by Dylan Clark and Amblin Entertainment, was written by T.J. Fixman.
Director Jaume Collet-Serra is content with the movie not getting a theatrical release, “We followed the same process as for every film intended for theaters,” he explained. “The film ‘Non-Stop’ performed well in theaters, but if I were making it today, it likely wouldn’t get a theatrical release. Times have changed, and I’m satisfied. Any method that allows the audience to find the movie, that’s fantastic. But there was nothing held back technically or visually in its production compared to any other film.
Denis Villeneuve has made clear that there haven’t been any discussions about a follow-up. “At this moment, we don’t have any schemes for a sequel,” he stated. “However, if the audience and families expressed a desire for a sequel, and if we came up with an idea that could match and surpass the original, perhaps we would consider it. But as things stand, there are no such plans in place.
Clark mentioned, “There’s currently no project in the works, but it’s intriguing to casually discuss such ideas. The characters are fascinating, especially Danielle Deadwyler’s character [detective Elena Cole]. You can imagine a scenario where a film could be made about her.
Dan Lin, Netflix’s head of film production, stated exclusively to EbMaster, ‘Carry-On’ is a tribute to the incredible action movies from the ’80s and ’90s that we all adore. We were delighted to create this movie as a nod to the finest examples of that genre. The audience’s reaction has been fantastic, and I’m ecstatic that it has made its way onto Netflix’s list of most-watched films. Kudos to Jaume, Dylan, the Amblin Entertainment team, and the entire cast and crew.’
In a chat on the “Just for EbMaster” podcast in December, Egerton expressed that the movie is extravagant and bigger-than-life, hoping it serves as an enjoyable, escape-filled Christmas spectacle lasting about two hours.
Egerton mentioned to me just before the film’s premiere that he would be willing for a follow-up. To put it frankly, until this morning, I hadn’t given it much thought because the movie was so exceptional in its own right, but I guess nothing can truly stop a successful franchise like ‘Die Hard’. I believe the project turned out wonderfully, and I am open to all possibilities. I’m always the one who thinks every job is my last. Mention the word ‘sequel’, and I perk up immediately.
