Carla Simón, Oliver Laxe, David Trueba Titles Lead List of Catalan Films Coming in 2025

2025 promises a significant surge for Catalan cinema, with its films, filmmakers, and production companies. Many highly anticipated Catalan projects are either in production or post-production now, set to premiere towards the end of the year, while others are launching successful festival runs.

The award-winning filmmaker Carla Simon, known for her Berlin Golden Bear win with “Alcarràs,” is set to premiere her upcoming film titled “Romería.” This production is nearing completion, and it tells the story of a woman who embarks on a journey to connect with her biological father’s family following his death from AIDS. This heartfelt project holds deep personal significance for Simon, as AIDS tragically claimed the lives of both her parents when she was only six years old.

From a business perspective, particularly within our home market, it’s hard to find a film with as much box office promise as “Los Aitas” by Borja Cobeaga. This is a comedy that appeals to all ages, following a group of middle-aged dads on an international gymnastics tour alongside their daughters. As a follower, I’m excited about its potential success!

Miguel Angel Jimenez’s grittily fashionable ’70s-era dark comedy, “The Birthday Party,” showcases Willem Dafoe along with a stellar cast of Spanish acting heavyweights. The film is being distributed worldwide by Bankside Films.

Supported by Movistar+, Pedro Almodóvar’s El Deseo, Filmes Da Ermida, Uri Films and 4A4 Productions, Oliver Laxe’s forthcoming Moroccan desert thriller “Sirat” is poised to be a major success at film festivals.

This year, Catalonia will debut its inaugural stop-motion feature film titled “Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake.” Led by director Irene Iborra Rizo, this project garnered attention during a showcase at the Annecy Work in Progress event last summer.

Later this year, Lluis Miñarro, an esteemed director known for producing “Uncle Boonmee,” will introduce his first genre feature titled “Emergency Exit.” In the movie, passengers find themselves unable to disembark from a bus journey through surreal and extraordinary landscapes.

In 2025, David Trueba, director of “Jokes and Cigarettes,” will be back in action, this time producing and directing “Siempre es invierno,” a feature film based on his novel “Blitz.” Produced by Atresmedia Cine, Ikiru Films, La Terraza Films, and Wrong Men, the distribution rights are held by BTeam Pictures.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share my thoughts on “Strange River,” the debut feature film by the rising talent Jaume Claret Muxart. This captivating production is supported by the esteemed Catalan producer Alba Sotorra. The story follows a teenager as he embarks on what may very well be his last bicycle trip with his parents, offering a poignant exploration of growing up and change.

As a 2023 Berlin Talents laureate, Júlia de Paz is set to debut her much-awaited film titled “Fed Up.” Currently in post-production, the production of this movie is a joint effort by Astra Pictures, Avalon, and Krater Films. Beta Cinema is responsible for managing its distribution.

Team B collaborates on the production and plans to release domestically the socially-themed drama “Sleepless City,” directed by Goya award-winning director Guillermo García Lopez, which focuses on a Romani boy residing in an unauthorized encampment.

The forthcoming premiere of “Forestera” by Lucía Aleñar Iglesias, a joint production between Spain, Italy, and Sweden, tells a story about a young girl who tragically witnesses her grandmother’s brutal demise. In an attempt to deal with this traumatic event, she adopts a method of coping that raises concerns among family members.

Iván Morales’ first film, titled ‘Join Me for Breakfast,’ presents interconnected tales about urban dwellers seeking redemption amidst a bustling metropolis. This production is now available for acquisition by Filmax.”

“In his debut movie, ‘Join Me for Breakfast,’ accomplished Catalan actor Iván Morales showcases multiple stories of city-dwellers hoping to start anew. The film is currently up for grabs by Filmax.

Director Pablo Maqueda, known for “Girl Unknown,” is back with the documentary “Caro nanni,” which is produced by Colose Producciones based in Girona. Meanwhile, Celia Rico, a past winner of San Sebastian New Directors (“Journey to a Mother’s Room”), is gearing up for her next project, “La buena letra,” co-produced by Arcadia, Misent Producciones, and Mod Producciones.

2025 Catalan films are showcasing screenings at the EFM market this year, aiming to secure international distribution partners for the near future. Included in these are Javier Ruiz Caldera’s heartwarming comedy “Wolfgang”, focusing on fatherhood and autism, and Robin Petré’s “Only on Earth”, which captures the delicate relationship between man and nature in fire-prone Galicia.

Some Catalan films that have previously been released but are now appearing on the festival circuit include “The Portuguese House” by Avelina Prat, produced by Distinto Films, O Som e a Fúria, Jaibo Films and Almendros Blancos; “Fury” by Gemma Blasco, which was recently chosen for this year’s SXSW Global program; “Away” by Gerard Oms, a Spain-Netherlands co-production; and “Deaf” by Eva Libertad, making its world premiere in this year’s Berlinale Panorama section.
