Captain Jason and Daisy Kelliher Struggled to Keep Up with the RHOSLC Ladies

The ladies’ midseason trip aboard the Katina on this season of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City was already full of memorable moments: Bronwyn Newport’s late arrival, Heather Gay claiming Lisa Barlow was sharing secrets, Britani Bateman alleging infidelity by Meredith Marks’s husband, Angie Katsanevas repeatedly getting sick and hurt, the unsettling dinner, and the now-famous image of Lisa on the swim platform, calling her husband while surrounded by fish. However, that only showed part of what happened.

The new season of Below Deck Down Under kicked off this week, giving us a look at the wild charter season from the crew’s perspective – serving, catering, and dealing with guest mishaps, like Angie’s accidents. The crew was already facing challenges – a steward leaving, tension between the chef and his assistant, and a new team getting acquainted – before the demanding guests arrived. The first three episodes focus on this charter, so we spoke with Captain Jason Chambers and chief stew Daisy Kelliher about the buzz from Bravocon, Daisy’s new romance, and the experience of hosting particularly high-maintenance guests.

What was the hardest part about having the Real Housewives cast on the boat?

Jason Chambers: Definitely just making sure Angie didn’t get hurt.

Daisy mentioned that while a guest’s hand injury was concerning, she was much more affected by severe seasickness and had a really rough time on the boat. Everything was new – the vessel itself, the captain, and the entire crew – and they were short a cook. Daisy found herself not only getting to know the boat and the staff, but also managing the demanding Housewives. They weren’t requesting anything extravagant, but were constantly asking for small things, like water, wine, or permission to do things like blow-dry their hair or go to the beach.

Compared to other demanding charter guests, these guests were different. JC explained that because they also work for Bravo, they seemed to recognize and appreciate the hard work the crew puts in. They’ve actually told us that! Other guests, however, tend to expect perfection and complain if they don’t get it – they want a lot for their money.

DK: The girls were great. They were really polite and they were demanding. They put us to the test.

The interviewer asked who was the most challenging guest and what my overall impression of the women on board was. I’d say they were all demanding, but Lisa stood out the most. I felt sorry for Bronwyn, as she seemed to be dealing with a lot. I really enjoyed spending time with Angie and Mary. I was a bit apprehensive about Mary at first because she’s very articulate, but she turned out to be incredibly kind and warm.

So, Jason, what did you think of meeting all the women? It seemed like some of you hadn’t met before.

Jason: They all hit it off and are definitely friends now. I saw them at BravoCon, and both Mary and Angie were amazing. It was really nice to catch up with everyone.

After the charter, I had a chance to relax and have dinner with the guests when the crew went out. It was nice getting to know them outside of the stressful work environment – everyone was much calmer and seemed completely exhausted.

Regarding the shouting, how did you, as professionals in the yachting world, handle it?

DK: It was very loud, to be honest. Those women really have powerful voices and could keep yelling for a long time – it was actually quite remarkable.

Honestly, it didn’t really impact our work at all. We’re professionals, and they had their own issues to deal with – we were just focused on getting the dinner service done. If you watch the season, you’ll see we had plenty of challenges of our own to handle. We let them sort things out and concentrated on keeping everything running smoothly on our end, putting out fires as they came up.

Watching the show unfold live was surprisingly different than I expected. Since we joined mid-season, the conflicts didn’t really resonate with us because we lacked the background information. It would have been much better to see an episode first to understand what the arguments were about. I found it hard to follow, and I was mostly focused on my work. Now, after watching the whole season, everything clicks and makes sense!

Okay, so the big question everyone’s asking – who saved Britani’s stuffed animal from the ocean? It was João, and honestly, the drama around this whole thing is still playing out! It’s become this huge, ongoing thing, even making its way back to Salt Lake City. You really see it unfold on screen, and it’s surprisingly captivating.

Initially, the unicorn didn’t seem significant to me – people were surprisingly upset about it, and I couldn’t understand why, thinking it was just a stuffed animal. Now I realize there was a deeper meaning and history behind it.

As a huge fan of the Real Housewives, I’ve been thinking about which city would be amazing for a charter! I usually watch Beverly Hills, and they’d definitely be entertaining, but honestly, they might be a little high-maintenance. We could use some real drama, so maybe the ladies from Potomac would be perfect. Right now, I’m finally getting around to watching the original RHONY, and it’s fantastic! Bringing those OGs back would be incredible, honestly.

How are you enjoying watching the original Real Housewives of New York City? Tell me all about it!

DK: I’m currently on season two, so I have a lot of great episodes left to watch. I know the ‘Scary Island’ trip is coming up, and it’s been really fun seeing Luann de Lesseps from the beginning – I’ve actually met her before. It’s interesting to watch these shows, considering how long ago they were filmed – 14 or 15 years!

I was asking Jason if he’d consider inviting some of his friends from BravoCon to join us on the yacht next season. He immediately said he’d love to have some of the guys, especially Austin Kroll and Craig Conover, and the rest of the Southern Charm crew!

Daisy, the previews show you getting close to João this season, and it seems you have a thing for guys who work on boats! What’s going on there?

DK: It’s true, we’re working really long hours, and it’s great when you connect with someone. I’m realizing a lot about myself through being on this show, and I always thought I didn’t like being the center of attention. But clearly, I do – that’s why I’m on TV and kissing all these guys!

JC: Oh, drunk kissing is amazing.

He was a great support to me all season, so I showed my appreciation with kisses.

Were you surprised by anything during your time working on The Real Housewives?

DK: It all happened so fast, it’s hard to say I was surprised. We get a list of the Housewives who are coming, and then there’s very little time to prepare – you just focus on getting the job done. Looking back, it was really entertaining to watch. I think the Housewives had a fantastic season – there were so many funny moments, like Lisa calling the swan a dog, Angie getting sick on the paddleboard, and Lisa’s scene with the fish – it was iconic!

It was really fun to watch the show, especially since Heather and I had no idea what everyone else was thinking. We found out later that rumors about us hooking up were a big topic at BravoCon! It was surprising to see it all play out, just like it is for us when we watch our own show. We only know our side of the story and what’s been filmed, so it’s always entertaining to see how things are perceived.

We wanted to check in with Jason about the rumors that have been circulating. Jason said it wasn’t a big deal. He knew what Heather had said, explaining it was just a mistake. They actually texted about it and had a good laugh together.

Are there any rumors we should start today?
JC: [Looking at Daisy] You and Jesse?

Wait, Daisy! Are you and Jesse Solomon from Summer House a thing?

JC: She talked about it on a podcast recently. She just said he’s very handsome.

DK: He is very handsome in real life.

You know, it’s funny. I always thought if you just got him out on the water, Daisy would be completely smitten. And honestly, I totally get it! There’s just something about being on a boat – the air, the freedom – it just makes me feel…well, let’s just say it brings out my romantic side. It’s definitely a boat thing, not a land thing, for me.
