Capcom “Focusing” On Reviving Other Franchises After Okami 2 And New Onimusha Reveals

As a long-time fan of Capcom and their unique blend of action, adventure, and mythology, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement at the news of the return of two beloved franchises – Okami and Onimusha! Growing up with these games, they left an indelible mark on my gaming life, offering rich narratives, captivating visuals, and challenging gameplay that kept me engaged for hours.

Last week, Capcom responded to a call from the 2000s by announcing new installments for both the Okami and Onimusha series. However, it appears that Capcom isn’t stopping there with reviving old franchises. In fact, the company is emphasizing its intention to reactivate dormant intellectual properties (IPs) alongside developing entirely new titles in the future.

Capcom’s press release following The Game Awards showcases Okami 2 and Onimusha Way of the Sword reveals as part of their future plans. Not only does Capcom aim to regularly launch significant new games annually, but they are also concentrating on rejuvenating dormant intellectual properties (IPs) that haven’t had a recent release. By utilizing their extensive content library and reviving past IPs such as Okami 2 and Onimusha Way of the Sword, Capcom is striving to boost corporate value through creating consistently efficient and high-quality titles in the future.

The long-awaited sequel to Okami, sometimes called the “Okami sequel project” by Capcom, will have the original’s director back in the helm, joined by Hideki Kamiya. First introduced on PlayStation 2 in 2006, the series did spawn a follow-up titled Okamiden for Nintendo DS in 2010 (or 2011 for North America). At this time, there is no set release date for the upcoming Okami sequel.

2026 marks my eagerly anticipated return to the world of Onimusha Way of the Sword, a new installment in the beloved series that last saw me on the PS2 back in 2006 with Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. This time around, I’ll be embarking on an adventure across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S!

It’s nothing out of the ordinary for Capcom to mention they are considering reviving old game series. Back in 2019, Capcom mentioned their plans to utilize dormant franchises. Also this year, the company reassured fans that Mega Man isn’t forgotten, which hints at a possible comeback for the Blue Bomber along with Okami in the coming years.
