I’m thrilled to share that Iris Knobloch, a highly esteemed figure who once led Warner Bros. in France and Germany, and made history as the first female president of the Cannes Film Festival (2022), has been given another chance to lead this prestigious event for another three-year term by the festival’s board.
The executive, originally from Germany but currently residing in Paris, will carry on collaborating with Thierry Fremaux, a veteran figure in the Cannes Film Festival who continues to oversee the official film choices.
Knobloch was chosen by the board of the French International Film Festival Association, a group that includes both government officials and film industry experts. She took over the position of Cannes festival president from Pierre Lescure.
Knobloch expressed deep gratitude for being entrusted by our Board of Directors once more. He is proud of the achievements in the last two iterations and looks forward to moving forward with General Delegate Thierry Frémaux and our hardworking staff in the upcoming years.
Maintaining the Festival’s artistic quality, promoting creative liberty, and preserving its humanistic ideals will be my main objectives. I am committed to preserving the impartiality of the selection process, fostering new talents, and making sure that Cannes stays a hub where cinematic artistry and technological advancements complement each other.
In June 2021, Knobloch concluded her 25-year career at WarnerMedia, during which she held various leadership positions in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, London, and Paris. While working for Warner Bros. France, she was instrumental in supporting bold and visionary filmmakers, including Michel Hazanavicius, whose acclaimed silent movie “The Artist” competed at Cannes and later won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Following her departure from the studio, Knobloch founded a $300-million European special purpose acquisition company, with prominent backers like Francois-Henri Pinault, a French billionaire entrepreneur who also runs Kering, an official sponsor of Cannes Film Festival since 2015.
Ever since Knobloch came on board at Cannes, the festival has consistently upheld its position regarding streamers whose films are eligible for competition, provided they can be screened in French cinemas. This policy, established in 2017, led Netflix to bypass Cannes and instead show their movies at either Venice or Toronto. However, this decision has enabled Cannes to present a more diverse array of films, including indie masterpieces carefully chosen by Fremaux and his team.
This year, the festival is significantly influencing the awards season, as multiple films selected at Cannes are now contenders for Oscars. Notably, these include “Emilia Perez” directed by Jacques Audiard, “The Substance” by Coralie Fargeat, and Sean Baker’s “Anora.
The 78th instalment of the Cannes Film Festival is scheduled for May 13th to the 24th. The list of selected films should be revealed approximately in mid-April.
