As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m still a little heartbroken about the Hunt for Ben Solo movie that we’re never going to see. It keeps popping up in the news, and it’s just sad! Apparently, it had been in development for a while, and Adam Driver was set to star, leading a whole new trilogy after The Rise of Skywalker. What’s even crazier is that Steven Soderbergh – the guy who directed Ocean’s 11 – was going to direct! It really felt like something special, and it’s a shame Disney ultimately decided to cancel it.
As a big Soderbergh fan, I’ve been following the story of his cancelled Star Wars project, and it’s just heartbreaking. He recently shared how much effort went into it, and it turns out he and his team spent two and a half years developing the film – completely unpaid! He called it The Hunt for Ben Solo, and honestly, hearing him talk about it makes it even more of a shame it never got made. It’s a huge loss for everyone who was excited about a different kind of Star Wars story.
It wasn’t surprising she was frustrated – we all were. Adam, Rebecca Blunt, and I had been working on this for two and a half years without pay. When Adam and I talked about him sharing the story, I asked him to simply state the facts and avoid offering opinions or guessing about the reasons behind it. We only knew what actually happened.
Honestly, when I asked about Ben Solo – Kylo Ren, you know – the official line was just, ‘We don’t believe he could have survived.’ That was it. No explanation, nothing. So, all I could do was accept it and try to focus on what they were telling me.
They simply said they didn’t believe Ben Solo had survived, and that was the end of the discussion. There wasn’t anything else we could do, so we had to accept it and move forward.
What frustrated fans the most was how enthusiastic Soderbergh seemed about the unmade Star Wars project. He confessed he essentially visualized the entire film, and he’s saddened that no one else will ever experience his version.
When I shared what I had, I’d already completely envisioned the project in my mind, and I was upset that no one else would experience it. I expected the discussion to focus on the logistics—like location and budget—and I had a solid plan ready to share. But we never even got to talk about any of that. It’s really frustrating, and everyone involved is quite disappointed.
Ever since the cancellation of the project was announced, there’s been a strong push for Disney and Lucasfilm to revive the film. Many petitions have started online, but Disney hasn’t publicly commented on whether the movie, The Hunt for Ben Solo, might happen in the future.
The Playlist reports that recent changes in leadership at Disney and Lucasfilm could give the planned Ben Solo movie a second chance, although there’s been no official confirmation.
Will The Hunt for Ben Solo Ever Happen?

It’s now less clear than it used to be whether “The Hunt for Ben Solo” will actually happen. Initially, it seemed the project was definitely cancelled, with no chance of ever being made. However, the situation has become more complicated and uncertain over time.
Recent leadership changes at Disney are the main reason for concerns about its future. Kathleen Kennedy has left her position at Lucasfilm, with Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan now leading the company. Additionally, Bob Iger is leaving as Disney’s CEO – for the second time – and Josh D’Amaro, who previously ran Disney Parks, will take over as the head of the entertainment company.
Although D’Amaro follows in the footsteps of the previous Disney leader, each new head of the studio naturally has their own goals and, crucially, their own approach to connecting with fans.
To quickly win over Disney fans, a smart move for D’Amaro would be to revive the cancelled series Hunt for Ben Solo. Both director Steven Soderbergh and actor Adam Driver have expressed continued enthusiasm for the project, making its revival a real possibility.
