A video game based on the 2008 movie The Dark Knight was once in production, but it was eventually cancelled. Over the years, clips of the game – developed by Monolith Productions, which has since closed – have appeared online. A new video recently revealed that the game would have mirrored the film’s intense atmosphere with a reactive and dynamic soundtrack.
I was blown away by some recently discovered materials – a real goldmine of stuff found by retro game collector Mar Talida! It includes early cutscenes, design notes, concept art, and tons more. And if you’re into video game music like I am, you have to hear this – there’s footage showing off how the game’s audio was designed to react to what was happening on screen. Apparently, the developers even used parts of Hans Zimmer’s Dark Knight soundtrack – which is amazing, considering how iconic those Batman films are – to demonstrate how cool this dynamic audio system would be!
Keep in mind that all of this material comes from the very beginning stages of development for the Batman game—known internally as Project Apollo. Because the files are from around 2009-2010, they appear less polished than the more recent 2024 leak.
I found a collection of old files – documents and videos – from the early development of Project Apollo, a Batman game that Monolith Productions started working on for Warner Bros. but never finished. These files are dated between April and January 2010 and were recovered from deleted parts of a hard drive used at a game studio. You can find them here: archive.org/details/proj… This is the first in a series of nine posts about this discovery.

Although a planned Batman game was cancelled – with some ideas later appearing in the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor game and its innovative Nemesis System – fans still enjoyed the successful Batman: Arkham series. Warner Bros. Games, the publisher, has gone through significant changes recently and may soon be owned by Netflix or Paramount. Currently, Rocksteady is reportedly developing a new solo Batman game, and DC’s head James Gunn has hinted at exciting future projects.
Good news for Batman fans! A new Lego Batman game, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, is coming out later this year. It seems to be inspired by the popular Arkham series and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S starting May 29th. A version for the new Nintendo Switch 2 console will follow at a later time.
