After a decade of work, the adventure game Hytale was canceled in June by its creators, Hypixel, and parent company Riot Games. At the same time, Hypixel itself was going to close down. However, Hypixel’s original founders have now stepped in to save the studio and are planning to release Hytale in early access.
Simon Collins-Laflamme, co-founder of Hypixel, shared on social media that his team has bought back the rights to Hytale from Riot Games and intends to release it quickly. He did warn players not to expect a flawless game right away, as it still needs a lot of work. While acknowledging it’s not finished, Collins-Laflamme promised that the wait is over and players will soon be able to play an unpolished version. He hopes the community will help shape the game into something great over time.

In a recent post on the official Hytale website, Collins-Laflamme explained that he and Hypixel co-founder Philippe Touchette are providing the funding to revive Hytale. Kevin Carstens will lead the technical side of the project, while Patrick Derbic will manage it. They’ve also brought back 30 of the original Hytale developers to work on the game.
Collins-Laflamme announced that the Hytale team is abandoning their current engine build because it’s falling behind on gameplay features and would take too long to finish. They’re going back to an older engine, known as The Legacy Engine, which is four years old but much closer to being ready for early access.
The game will be in early access for at least a few years, as the developers want to ensure it’s fully polished before the official release. When early access begins, players will have access to Exploration Mode, Creative Mode, and the ability to create mods. Minigames and Adventure Mode will be added in future updates. The Hypixel team has committed to funding the project for the next decade and is working independently, without any external investors or publishers.
