Canadian university launches its own VTuber group completely made by students

A Canadian university has created a group of VTubers – virtual content creators – comprised of students in its arts program. These students design everything themselves, including animations, characters, and other visual content.

In 2025, Simon Fraser University, located in Vancouver, Canada, introduced Cappuverse – its team of official virtual VTuber representatives.

The program is preparing to accept its next group of aspiring VTubers, students currently enrolled in university courses designed around this exciting new technology that’s changing how we experience online entertainment.

The university’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology has a state-of-the-art motion capture studio, ‘StudioSIAT,’ offering students hands-on experience with video production, editing, and special effects – ideal training for anyone hoping to become a VTuber.

StudioSIAT classes teach students to create their own VTuber models – including design, animation, and rigging – and also cover how to use AR and XR software.

Cappuverse aims to revolutionize media creation, storytelling, and technology by giving students real-world experience on professional-quality projects, according to Jay Tseng, manager of StudioSIAT, in an email to TopMob.

This covers a wide range of creative and technical roles involved in making a production, including design, illustration, animation, motion capture, 3D modeling, character rigging, and development for augmented and virtual reality.

Tseng explains that Cappuverse is created entirely by students from SFU and other Canadian universities. They also hold auditions within their schools to find talented students who can represent them internationally.

The next group of Virtual Ambassadors, known as ‘THE BUREAU’, will officially launch on Friday, February 27th, with the release of two animated trailers.

It might seem surprising, but VTubing and education have connected before. Just earlier this month, a tutoring company in Japan started an online school staffed entirely by VTubers, offering courses for around $65 each.
