Can We Talk About That Intense Fantastic Four: First Steps Scene With Sue Storm That Took Me Off Guard?

Warning: SPOILERS for The Fantastic Four: First Steps are ahead!

Out of the three Marvel movies released in 2025, I enjoyed The Fantastic Four: First Steps the most. Its unique 1960s retro-future style and accurate portrayal of Galactus felt like a fresh start for the franchise, and it’s made me really look forward to seeing this version of the Fantastic Four in Avengers: Doomsday and future Marvel films. Now that First Steps is available to stream on Disney+, I want to discuss a particularly powerful scene featuring Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm.

The Fantastic Four – Sue, Reed, Ben, and Johnny – had a disastrous first meeting with Galactus. They immediately realized he would only spare Earth if they handed over their unborn child, Franklin. Galactus even triggered Sue’s labor during their escape from the Silver Surfer in space, and Franklin was born shortly after. However, while in labor, Sue insisted her brother try to destroy Galactus’s messenger, the Silver Surfer, saying:

Johnny, kill her. She wants to take your nephew. Kill her!

More of TopMob’s Thoughts on The Fantastic Four: First Steps

I’ve always enjoyed the Fantastic Four films, and I believe ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ is the Marvel movie I’ve been waiting for.

You know, the more I’ve been reflecting on The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the more I find myself wishing they’d given one particular character a lot more to do. It felt like a missed opportunity, honestly. I kept wanting to see more of them and their potential, but it just didn’t quite happen. It’s a small thing, but it’s been sticking with me.

I was surprised when I first saw this movie. I’m not against superheroes killing in general – characters like The Punisher and Wolverine wouldn’t be as interesting if they didn’t – but it felt unusual to hear a member of the Fantastic Four suggest killing someone. The Fantastic Four have definitely faced tough situations and made hard choices in the comics, but I usually see them as heroes who try to avoid killing and find other ways to solve problems first.

At first, I questioned including this scene from The Fantastic Four: First Steps, but the more I considered it, the better I felt about it. Beyond the physical strain Sue Storm was experiencing, she was on the verge of giving birth. A mother’s protective instincts are incredibly strong, and while Sue wouldn’t typically resort to violence, she was determined to defend her child at all costs.

The post-credits scene in The Fantastic Four: First Steps hinted at the return of Doctor Doom, showing him contacting Franklin four years after the defeat of Galactus. This makes me think about how Susan Storm will react if Robert Downey Jr.’s character takes her son. It’s safe to say she’ll be furious, and will stop at nothing – even traveling across the multiverse – to rescue Franklin. We’ll find out for sure when Avengers: Doomsday comes out on December 18, 2026.
