As a long-time admirer of Timothée Chalamet, I can confidently say that he is more than just an indie darling; he is a multi-talented artist with a rich history of singing and rapping. From his high school days performing as Oscar Lindquist in “Sweet Charity” to his recent work on the soundtrack for “A Complete Unknown,” Chalamet has proven time and again that he can hold his own when it comes to singing.
Is it being speculated that Timothée Chalamet’s vocal talents could have made him a pop idol or Broadway legend instead of a Disney Channel star like Zendaya? That remains to be seen. However, he is set to appear in the film “A Complete Unknown“, which will be released on Christmas Day, and he sings in it himself. While he has plenty of experience with rapping, that’s not quite reminiscent of Dylan-style music, so you might wonder why they allowed him to sing. To clarify this, let’s revisit Chalamet’s past singing endeavors, including his contribution to the soundtrack for “A Complete Unknown“.
Exhibit A: “Sweet Charity”
In the school play of “Sweet Charity” at Fiorello H. La Guardia High School, Timothée Chalamet left all the girls speechless with his portrayal of Oscar Lindquist.
Exhibit B: “Everything Happens to Me”
He starred in a Woody Allen movie that was barely released in the United States on account of Allen’s allegations of sexual misconduct and child abuse. Chet Baker did it better, but Chalamet is for sure singing here.
Exhibit C: Wonka
During the filming of the upcoming “Wonka” movie in 2021, fans spotted Chalamet practicing his singing off-guard. Upon viewing the video, it’s clear that he was indeed crooning while perched on a moving vehicle.
Exhibit D: “Tiny Horse”
His best vocal performance to date.
Exhibit E: “Yeet Skrt”
He rapped live on TV — because he is a rapper as well as a singer.
Exhibit F: Miss Stevens
In 2016, this movie was released, one year prior to his groundbreaking performance in “Call Me by Your Name.” Despite my lack of knowledge regarding its plot, the video snippet demonstrates that he possesses vocal abilities even while traveling in a moving car.
Exhibit G: Lady Bird
In this video, Timothée Chalamet doesn’t actually sing, but it highlights that he has portrayed characters who belong to bands in previous roles.
Exhibit H: “Roman’s Revenge”
Timothée Chalamet didn’t kick off his rapping career with his SNL sketch with Pete Davidson. In fact, it was during his high school days when he started honing his skills in rap music. This video serves as the second evidence of his versatile vocal abilities, which aren’t limited to singing but also extend to rapping. He is, or was, recognized as a Barb in the rap scene.
Exhibit I: “Hell’s Kitchen Bed”
His most authentic rap creation features lyrics such as “Home, Home / Now it’s Domeland / Meaning I get action daily” and “His rhymes are limp / Mine are powerful.” (He had a part in the Showtime series ‘Homeland’ previously.)
Exhibit J: “Itty Bitty Piggy,” “Boyfriend,” and “Gangnam Style” Medley
This singer-rapper can also produce a well-curated set.
Exhibit K: Untitled Composition by Tiny Tim & Sixth Period Lunch
Even in 2011, he did his own vocals.
Exhibit L: “Statistics”
His biggest hit to date.
Exhibit M: A Complete Unknown Soundtrack

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got to say it – that’s definitely Timmy! Despite his best attempts at channeling Dylan, if you’re familiar with Timmy’s everyday voice, you’d recognize him instantly. Listening to this soundtrack also brings to mind the fact that Dylan isn’t what one would call a classically trained singer. Yet, he’s an impactful vocalist without a doubt, but he’s no Mariah Carey. With those thoughts in mind, I’ve got to admit, it’s not half bad!
