Finding something lost is usually a happy event, but what if it’s not just an object, but something massive like a boat—one that’s been missing for three decades? That’s the premise of Mark Jenkin’s upcoming film, Rose of Nevada, releasing June 19th. The film centers around this ship, which mysteriously reappears in the harbor of the small fishing village it vanished from years ago. But the ship’s return isn’t enough to solve the town’s problems. Since the Rose of Nevada disappeared, the village has fallen on hard times. People hope that if the ship can sail again, it might bring prosperity back to the community. The new crew includes popular British actors Callum Turner and George MacKay, who may not realize the challenges that lie ahead.

Similar to his previous films, Bait and Enys Men, Jenkin’s Rose of Nevada hints at folk horror, tapping into our fear of what we don’t understand. By the time one of the characters finds the chilling message “GET OFF THE BOAT NOW” carved into the boat’s wood, the danger has already begun.
