Professional League of Legends player Gabriël ‘Bwipo’ Rau has addressed criticism following his comments suggesting that women should not participate in competitive gaming during their menstrual cycle.
Gabriël ‘Bwipo’ Rau, a top League of Legends player, has responded to criticism about his statement that women should not compete in gaming while menstruating.
On September 9th, the professional League of Legends player Bwipo from FlyQuest found himself in a controversial situation due to remarks he made about women participating in the game while experiencing menstruation. Originally, Bwipo expressed concern about the lack of support for female professional players during their monthly cycles. However, it was his subsequent comments that ignited public fury.
According to him, during certain times, women might find it challenging to perform optimally in competitive League of Legends due to hormonal changes. He suggested that these periods could potentially impact a woman’s gameplay, and thus, might not be ideal for engaging in serious competition.
During a period, I shared my life with someone who was deeply into ranked League of Legends. It was evident when she would frequently become frustrated over minor issues, which I want to clarify is not an attempt at generalization or sexism; it was simply her response to the game.
Bwipo apologizes after FlyQuest suspension
Following the reemergence of his comments, several women in the eSports community criticized Bwipo. Among them was Sjokz, who labeled his remarks as “uninformed.
In the end, Bwipo acknowledged his mistake on September 10 by stating, ‘I realize I made a blunder. My remarks were insensitive and disrespectful towards women, even those dear to me.’ He shared this apology on platform X (previously known as Twitter).
I want to express my sincere apologies to anyone I may have unintentionally harmed. I recognize now that I used my platform in a harmful way, promoting negativity and sexism rather than providing support. Moving forward, I plan to take time for reflection, active listening, and making improvements to ensure I act more positively.
Hello everyone, I acknowledge that I made a mistake. My words were thoughtless and disrespectful towards women, even those who are dear to me.
I apologize from the bottom of my heart to those I may have hurt. Using my platform unknowingly to propagate vitriol and sexism was wrong, and I deeply regret it. Going forward, I will be taking time to reflect, listen, learn, and make amends by using my platform to support and uplift instead.

As a passionate supporter, I’m sharing that Bwipo found himself temporarily away from FlyQuest due to some remarks he made. Interestingly enough, their response was not only to enforce the suspension but also to channel his winnings towards charities that uplift women in the gaming community.
He won’t be present for the upcoming LTA playoff series against Vivo Keyd Stars, but it remains unclear if he’ll additionally receive discipline from both Riot Games and the LTA.
