Billy Butcher has always been a troubled character, but Season 5 of The Boys will show a frightening new side of him. He’s becoming almost like a relentless machine, similar to The Terminator. Actor Karl Urban recently discussed how his character’s personality and state of mind will change in the new season, hinting at a complete takeover of his body and self.
Karl Urban explains Butcher’s transformation into a Terminator-like killer
Butcher has always been a man fueled by rage and a strong sense of mission, and Season 5 of The Boys amplifies that even further. Following the events of the previous season, Butcher succumbs to a powerful, symbiotic entity growing within him, fundamentally altering his methods and behavior.
This realization allowed Karl Urban to play the character in a new way. He began portraying Butcher as someone with a divided personality, struggling with the contrast between his past self and who he was becoming. This wasn’t just about a change in appearance; it was a deep psychological shift that influenced how he made choices and acted.
Karl Urban told ScreenRant that getting to season five of The Boys felt like a fresh start. He explained that after Butcher bonds with a powered symbiote at the end of season four, it opened up exciting new possibilities for the character.
This change caused Urban to portray Butcher as if he had two distinct personalities. The contrast between these sides is significant. When Butcher accesses this power, Urban described him as robotic and resembling the Terminator – lacking empathy and becoming a cold, merciless killer. However, the original, more unpredictable and enjoyable Butcher still exists, balancing out the darker side.
Despite the recent changes, Butcher is still completely dedicated to his goal. Urban describes him as still being the intensely motivated leader of The Boys, but now he’s also fighting to maintain what little remains of his compassion and empathy.
As The Boys Season 5 premieres on April 8, fans will get to see how it plays out.
