Fans finally know when to expect the reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Hulu announced a pilot order earlier this year, ending years of rumors. The new show will both continue the story of the original series and reimagine it for a new generation, with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning as Buffy Summers.
Sarah Michelle Gellar will return in the new series, but the show will focus on a new vampire hunter named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, known for her roles in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and The Lowdown. The pilot episode is directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), and the script is written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, the writers behind Poker Face and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Gellar, Zhao, and the Zuckerman sisters will all also be executive producers on the show.
Despite no official announcement about a full season order, Variety reports the planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is currently aiming for a 2026 premiere on Hulu. This news comes as part of a larger trend of popular shows from the late 90s and early 2000s being revived or continued, like Scrubs, Prison Break, and Malcolm in the Middle.
Reports indicate that a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is finally in development at Hulu, though the streaming service hasn’t officially confirmed it. This news isn’t unexpected, as both Joss Whedon and Sarah Michelle Gellar have hinted at the project, with Gellar even expressing interest in reuniting original cast members.
A positive indicator is that the Buffy reboot is moving ahead much quicker than the planned Prison Break revival. News of Prison Break first surfaced in November 2023, with casting and plot details emerging in March 2025, and an official order coming in October 2025. In contrast, the Buffy pilot was announced in February, filmed this summer, and is currently aiming for a 2026 release.
