Sarah Michelle Gellar, the original star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, shared disappointing news with fans over the weekend: the planned reboot, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, won’t be happening on Hulu. For twenty years, rumors of a revival have circulated, and it recently seemed promising with Gellar set to return as Buffy and even help produce the show. That’s why Hulu’s decision to cancel the pilot is so surprising and frustrating for fans.
The situation became even more confusing considering Chloé Zhao, who directed and produced the project, previously won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director with her film Nomadland. Given the impressive team and Sarah Michelle Gellar’s backing, the project seemed destined for success. In a recent interview with Variety, Zhao explained the surprising decision from Hulu.
I had a fantastic time working with Sarah and everyone involved in the project. We really feel a responsibility to honor and protect the spirit of the original show.
As a huge fan, what’s always mattered most to me – and to Sarah, from what I understand – is staying true to the spirit of the show and being honest with everyone who loves it as much as I do.
Despite the disappointing news, Zhao remained optimistic, playfully suggesting that everything happens for a reason and encouraging fans to embrace the unknown. When asked about the possibility of the show continuing on a different platform, she simply repeated her sentiment, urging everyone to ‘welcome the mystery.’
This recent news about Buffy is actually less upsetting than some of the other issues the show has faced, particularly when compared to the serious accusations against its creator, Joss Whedon.
Following the success of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Joss Whedon created the series Firefly and directed the blockbuster films The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He then stepped away from Marvel to complete Justice League after Zack Snyder departed the project, appearing to achieve a career many fans would envy. However, in 2020, Ray Fisher, who starred in Justice League, publicly accused Whedon of unprofessional and toxic behavior. This led to an investigation by Warner Bros. and support for Fisher’s claims from several of his fellow cast members.

In 2021, Charisma Carpenter, known for her roles in Buffy and Angel, publicly accused Joss Whedon of harmful behavior. Her claims were supported by costars Amber Benson and Michelle Trachtenberg, who also shared their own negative experiences with him. Whedon was not involved in the planned Buffy reboot.

The recent news that Hulu won’t be continuing Buffy isn’t unique. Revivals that seem like sure hits sometimes fall apart. For example, Kevin Bacon returned as his character Valentine McKee from the 1990 film Tremors for a potential SYFY series in 2017. Though a pilot was made, the network decided not to continue with the show in 2018. Despite Bacon’s involvement and excitement about bringing the series back, it never aired.
Look, I’m a huge Buffy fan, and honestly, the idea of a new series is exciting but also a little scary! I really hope something happens with it – a reboot, a continuation, anything – but please, let’s just hope it doesn’t fall apart before we even get a chance to see it!
