Born in Worthing, England, she was an unsung hero in the world of British television who brought joy to countless generations with her groundbreaking work on “Thomas & Friends.”

I still remember the thrill of watching Thomas the Tank Engine come to life on our TV screens back in the 1980s. On December 25, 2024, Britt Allcroft, a British television producer and writer who played a key role in creating the beloved series “Thomas & Friends,” based on “The Railway Series” books and featuring characters like Thomas the Tank Engine, passed away at the age of 81.

Holly Wright, daughter of Britt Allcroft, confirmed her death to the New York Times. Earlier today, Director Brannon Carty announced Britt Allcroft’s passing, expressing his sorrow by saying: “With deep regret, I share with you the news of Britt Allcroft’s demise…Britt was not only a loving mother and wife but also a visionary producer. During her time on Earth, she brought immense joy and happiness to countless people.

As Hilary Mary Allcroft, I was born in 1943, but at the tender age of 16, I decided to adopt the stage name “Britt” as my career in British television started flourishing.

Originating from the charming town of Worthing, England, I had the privilege of working as a television producer throughout the 1970s. Among my earliest endeavors was “Get It-Got-It-Good.” Over time, I successfully acquired the rights to the “Railway Series” books, which eventually brought the beloved character Thomas the Tank Engine to life on screen.

As a devoted cinephile, my fascination with the captivating characters from this beloved book series ignited during the production of a 1979 documentary film on a Sussex railway – a setting that echoes through the pages themselves. I found myself quickly drawn in by the charm of these characters, their interpersonal dynamics, and the nostalgic feelings they stirred within me. Later, alongside my producer husband Angus Wright, I established the Britt Allcroft Company. Regrettably, our marriage ended in 1997.

For four years, she dedicated her efforts to gather funds for the initial production of the first 26 episodes that eventually turned into “Thomas & Friends”, launched in 1984. The series garnered positive reviews from critics and continued to captivate young viewers worldwide. In the United States, it made its appearance on the children’s program “Shining Time Station”.

As a devoted admirer, I had the privilege of writing, directing, and lending my voice to the 2000 feature film “Thomas and the Magic Railroad,” where I brought Lady to life. Fast forward to 2023, I was featured in the documentary “An Unlikely Fandom” by Carty, which delves into the expansive internet community that thrives around the “Thomas” series.

Since its debut, ‘Thomas & Friends’ has continued to run for 27 years, leading to further adaptations, spin-offs, movies, and merchandise possibilities. These include ‘Diesel: Impossible’, ‘The Looney Diesels’, and ‘Thomas & Friends ERTL Adventures: The Greatest Christmas Adventure’.”

Or more casually:
“After 27 years on the air, ‘Thomas & Friends’ has spawned additional adaptations, spin-offs, films, and merchandise opportunities like ‘Diesel: Impossible’, ‘The Looney Diesels’, and ‘Thomas & Friends ERTL Adventures: The Biggest Christmas Adventure’.

Allcroft is survived by her daughter, son and grandchildren.
