A researcher at the University of Bristol has become popular online for developing a tune that makes people perceive chocolate as even sweeter than it is.
Galaxy Chocolate, a popular UK chocolate brand, worked with sound expert Natalie Hyacinth from the University of Bristol to create a 90-second song called ‘The Sweetest Melody.’
This experience enhances the sweetness of chocolate by cleverly combining information from your senses – what you see, hear, and feel. It’s all about how your brain works to blend these sensations together.
Sound expert makes unique song to enhance chocolate’s sweetness
Hyacinth’s research showed that listening to upbeat, happy music can actually make sweet foods taste even better. She and her colleagues studied different aspects of music – like how high or low the notes were, the speed of the music, and its overall harmony – to understand how it could enhance flavor.
She explained in an interview with SWNS Digital that carefully structured music can be the most enjoyable. The song itself is a lovely, melodic piece built around piano layers, with a bright, high-pitched sound and a tempo of 78 beats per minute. She also noted that the harp’s high-pitched and bright tones add to its beauty.
The combination of these sounds interacts with your brain’s senses, making chocolate seem sweeter than it actually is. I tested this out myself and found it made a Chocolove Milk Chocolate bar only a little bit sweeter.
KTLA 5 news anchors also gave it a try on live television, but their experience was underwhelming, as they tested chocolate that had already expired in 2023.
Galaxy uses genuine scientific principles to enhance the flavor of its chocolate, though it’s also a clever marketing strategy.
