The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, often seen as a group of influential yet questionable figures, gained an undeserved level of prominence due to Dick Clark Productions’ exceptional television show, which turned into a major stopover en route to the Oscars. It seems reasonable that the industry tolerated their antics for too long. It appears justifiable that they are no longer involved in the decision-making process for the Golden Globe Awards.
That said.
I miss the old Golden Globes, and I want to go back.
This discussion primarily revolves around the TV awards, but let’s not forget that this year’s movie winners were truly impressive. A significant part of their success can be attributed to the widespread admiration for films such as “The Brutalist” and “The Substance”. If someone had predicted a year ago that Demi Moore, Sebastian Stan, Fernanda Torres, and Adrien Brody would take home the lead acting awards in film at the Golden Globes, they might have been watching Sunday’s show from a mental health facility.
Contrarily, the TV awards were anything but conventional. The show “Shōgun” is truly exceptional and deserved its impressive Emmy haul in September. It swept all categories it competed in at the Golden Globes, making it a four-time winner. However, we don’t attend the Golden Globes to see carbon copies of the Emmy winners. Jean Smart, Jeremy Allen White, Jodie Foster, Jessica Gunning, “Hacks” in Comedy Series, and “Baby Reindeer” in Miniseries are all Emmy award recipients, yet they were also honored at the Golden Globes. The only exception was Colin Farrell’s win for “The Penguin,” where the Emmys’ influence seemed to falter.
It wasn’t common that the Golden Globes would give awards to shows like “The Sopranos,” “Sex and the City,” and “Breaking Bad.” However, these accolades were often shared with shows and actors who rarely had a chance at the more prestigious Emmys. What caused the shift in the voting body that once honored “Mozart in the Jungle” and “The Kominsky Method” as Best Comedy or “Nip/Tuck” and “The Affair” as Best Drama? The voting body that awarded Kelsey Grammer for “Boss,” Anna Paquin for “True Blood,” Katey Sagal for “Sons of Anarchy,” and Matt LeBlanc for “Episodes” would never have given awards to shows that simply repeated last year’s Emmy winners. Yes, we found a lot of these funny, or we were furious when “Emily in Paris” was nominated over more deserving shows, but our hearts raced! We felt alive!
It wasn’t just about the “LOL, those crazy Globes” jokes; there were instances where the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) recognized exceptional performances and series that other award shows overlooked. For instance, Claire Danes was awarded for her role in My So-Called Life, Jason Bateman for Arrested Development, Jennifer Garner for Alias, Keri Russell for Felicity, Michaela Jae Rodriguez for Pose, and Rachel Bloom for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Sandra Oh, who should have received Emmys for her acting in shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve, only won Golden Globes instead. Shows such as Atlanta never won a Best Comedy Emmy, but the Globes recognized its brilliance. The HFPA even awarded Party of Five with a Best Drama Series win, although it wasn’t necessary, and was arguably more enjoyable than watching shows like NYPD Blue win multiple times at the Emmys.
To put it simply: The Golden Globe Awards are not widely regarded as significant due to the fact that they’re not determined by peers, professionals within the industry, or critics. However, there is a certain prestige attached to winning an award at the Golden Globes because it offers the opportunity to give a speech on national television and potentially influence voters for the Oscars. This indirect value is why many people, including us, choose to participate in them.
For the TV awards, it’s not that the Emmys are still far off – they’re actually getting closer, more in the rearview mirror than ahead on the horizon. The idea of meticulously honoring TV shows for their unquestionable excellence is commendable, but it can feel a bit dull. Perhaps it would be more exciting to mix things up with some unexpected winners and less predictable choices?
The common criticism of the “older” Globes was that they’d just give awards to whatever TV show was the latest and most talked about. This was often accurate. But what was wrong with that? Now, we can recall a show like Mozart in the Jungle, and even click over to YouTube to watch Geena Davis deliver a wickedly funny acceptance speech for a series (Commander in Chief) that people hardly remember anymore.
It seems that the recent Golden Globes have somewhat improved their reputation, although they still have room for improvement. They’ve become less controversial, which is a positive change. However, they could also aim to be more engaging and captivating as well.
