With season 5 of Bridgerton on the way, the popular historical romance series was facing a challenge, but it seems to have a solution thanks to some new actors. Netflix announced three new cast members on April 8th, which was a major update following the reveal that Francesca (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza) will be the central couple in the upcoming season.
Following the romance between Benedict and Sophie, a major plot point in Bridgerton season 4 was the death of John Stirling, which left Francesca a widow. Francesca found comfort in John’s sister, Michaela, as she grieved. However, the season finale hinted that Michaela’s feelings for Francesca were romantic, causing Francesca to withdraw and leave her feeling isolated.
Season 5 of Bridgerton is adding new characters to help tell Michaela’s story as she takes center stage. We’ll get to know the important people in her life, including her mother, Helen Stirling, played by Jacqueline Boatswain, who is described as the inspiration behind Michaela’s personality. Gemma Knight Jones joins the cast as Lady Elizabeth Ashworth, Michaela’s longtime friend and trusted advisor in London.
Joining the cast of Bridgerton season 5 is Tega Alexander, who will play Christopher Anderson, the son of Lord Anderson. Netflix describes Christopher as a charming and skilled flirt from the Regency era, potentially even more captivating than the Bridgerton brothers themselves. He’s expected to be a significant addition to the new season.
Christopher Anderson Will Be The Rake Of Season 5 Now That Most Of The Bridgerton Men Are Married
Look, we all adore the big love stories on Bridgerton, but honestly, a huge part of what makes the show so fun is the ‘rake’ character. You know the type – charming rogue, a little dangerous, and always with that knowing look in his eyes. He brings a deliciously scandalous energy to everything, even though, let’s be real, we’re all secretly hoping he’ll eventually ditch the playboy lifestyle and find a genuine connection.
One of the main issues with season 4 of Bridgerton was the absence of a truly scandalous character. While Benedict and Sophie’s love story was charming, Benedict giving up his playful, rebellious side so quickly to focus on Sophie made the first part of the season feel a bit slow and uneventful.
With Anthony, Colin, and Benedict all settled down with wives, and Gregory still being too young, there’s no Bridgerton brother left to fill the role of the charming rogue. Though Gregory’s growing interest in romance was a sweet side story in season 4, the show has proven, as seen with Simon Basset in season 1, that the scandalous figure doesn’t have to be a Bridgerton at all.
Christopher Anderson arrives on the scene, and if he’s anything like his father, Lord Marcus Anderson (played by Daniel Francis), he’s sure to be charming and exciting. It’s great to see the Bridgerton siblings finding happiness in marriage, but once their stories are resolved, they don’t have much to do in the plot—and with half of them already married, that’s becoming a significant issue.
Christopher Anderson adds a playful, yet troubled, energy to Bridgerton. Netflix describes him as someone who hides insecurities beneath a charming exterior, creating compelling drama. It’s exactly the kind of story Lady Whistledown would be eager to share with her readers.
There’s Room For Both Francesca & Michaela’s Romance & Swoon-Worthy Men In Bridgerton Season 5
The news that Francesca and Michaela will be the main couple in Bridgerton season 5 received some negative reactions. Many fans were upset that the show wasn’t following the order of Julia Quinn’s novels, specifically by moving past Eloise’s story and changing the original storyline.
Don’t worry, fans of Eloise! The show’s creator, Jess Brownell, has already announced that Eloise and Francesca will be the focus of seasons 5 and 6, meaning we’ll definitely get to see Eloise’s love story. And Bridgerton has changed the book order before – successfully switching Colin and Benedict’s stories – so it’s not a surprise they’re doing it again.
Some viewers have criticized the show for changing Michaela into Michael in Francesca’s story, When He Was Wicked. However, it’s important to remember that the Bridgerton series already takes significant liberties with the original novels. Specifically, the books lacked racial diversity, a key element added by Shonda Rhimes and the show’s original creator, Chris Van Dusen.
Beyond its passionate moments, Bridgerton has become incredibly popular because it breaks new ground. With a diverse cast and a willingness to explore different social classes – as seen in season 4 – the show is changing who gets to be the focus of historical dramas. This is important because the period drama genre can easily become predictable and unwelcoming if it doesn’t adapt and include more voices.
Season 5 of Bridgerton is taking the series in a positive direction by introducing its first central LGBTQ+ couple, and that’s definitely something to applaud. The only minor worry is that viewers who prefer romances with male leads might find fewer options, as there isn’t a prominent single male character or a central Bridgerton brother to focus on.
But that’s where Christopher Anderson’s vision shines through. Bridgerton has a huge cast, which could feel crowded, but it’s wonderful because there’s a storyline and character for every viewer. Season 5 will deliver a potentially epic romance with Francesca and Michaela, alongside a captivating rogue. Get ready, viewers – you’re in for something special!
