I’m so excited! Netflix finally confirmed that Season 5 of Bridgerton will focus on Francesca’s romance. It’s interesting because they’re not following the book order exactly – her story is actually the sixth book, coming after Eloise’s. But honestly, that big twist in Season 4 felt like it was hinting at what’s to come for Eloise, so maybe we’ll still see her story woven in somehow!
Switching up the storyline with Francesca’s narrative wasn’t as surprising as when Bridgerton first did it in Season 3. That season covered the fourth book in the series, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, which focuses on the romance between Colin and Penelope. Another plot point from Romancing Mister Bridgerton was also altered and could potentially be used in Season 5 of Bridgerton instead.
Bridgerton Season 5 Will Follow Francesca and Michaela’s Love Story
Francesca Bridgerton doesn’t play a major role in the early books of the series. Her story really begins in the sixth book, When He Was Wicked. After marrying John and moving away, she misses out on a lot of family events. However, following John’s death, Francesca unexpectedly finds love again with his cousin, Michael.
The show is finally introducing its first major queer couple, and many viewers are excited to see this love story develop. While not everyone may be pleased with this change, it’s generating a lot of buzz. Though Francesca and Michaela are currently the focus, this development could also pave the way for Eloise’s storyline in the next season.
Eloise’s Story Plays Out in the Background of Colin and Penelope’s Romance
Eloise’s romance was originally planned to follow Colin and Penelope’s stories in the books. Her book, To Sir Phillip, With Love, comes after Romancing Mister Bridgerton. Interestingly, a key plotline from her book – Colin suspecting Eloise is Lady Whistledown – could be used as a central storyline for the fifth season of Bridgerton.
The first season of Bridgerton made several changes from the original books, and a major one involved the identity of Lady Whistledown. In the books, Penelope’s secret isn’t revealed until Romancing Mister Bridgerton. Before that happens, Colin actually believes his sister, Eloise, is the one writing the scandalous gossip column.
Colin believes Eloise might be the mysterious Lady Whistledown because she often hides in her room, and when she emerges, her fingers are stained with ink. He questions her about it, and she claims the ink comes from writing letters, but Colin remains unconvinced.
Colin eventually discovers Penelope is Lady Whistledown, causing everyone to forget about Eloise’s many letters and time spent secluded. However, this is short-lived, as Eloise unexpectedly runs away during a ball in the final pages of Romancing Mister Bridgerton, just as Penelope is about to reveal her identity as Lady Whistledown.
Eloise leaving town kicks off the story To Sir Phillip, With Love, revealing the details of her situation and the recipient of her letters. While Colin and Eloise’s stories unfold around the same time, the narrative deliberately separates their experiences and removes any direct connection between them.
Bridgerton Season 5 Could Instead Connect Francesca and Eloise’s Story
The surprise appearance of a new Lady Whistledown has shocked fans of Bridgerton, as this doesn’t happen in the original books. Many are wondering who it could be, and the show may use the book Romancing Mister Bridgerton as a way to introduce Eloise’s storyline when the focus shifts to Francesca’s season.
Season 5 of Bridgerton might introduce a surprising development: many characters could begin to suspect Eloise is the one writing the scandalous Lady Whistledown pamphlets. This idea makes sense because Eloise is currently unmarried, while her close friends and siblings are all settling into married life. Plus, she’s known for her clever and insightful mind, which would be perfect for crafting such writings.
Season 5 of Bridgerton has the potential to create an even more compelling story by following the subplot from Romancing Mister Bridgerton, mirroring the book series. Similar to the novel, Colin might even suspect Eloise of being Lady Whistledown, before it’s revealed she’s actually been corresponding with Sir Phillip.
Sir Phillip was first seen in the series and was previously married to Marina. After Marina’s death, he started writing letters to Eloise, and they formed a connection. Eloise secretly runs away to be with him. The groundwork laid with these secret letters in Season 5 could naturally set up the storyline for Season 6 of Bridgerton.
Lady Whistledown, the gossip columnist, was central to the drama of Bridgerton, knowing everything about everyone. When Penelope Featherington is revealed as Lady Whistledown and stops writing, it’s natural that someone else would take her place. Without the original novels to prepare viewers, this new reveal could be quite surprising.
Although Eloise might be the new Lady Whistledown, it feels more likely the ink stains are a deliberate distraction. This could be setting up a romantic storyline for her next season, and it definitely adds an exciting new layer to the mystery, keeping viewers guessing.
