I have to say, the team behind Bridgerton really knocked it out of the park with the new character, Sophie Baek! It’s so hard to introduce someone you can actually see fitting into the family – and after spending so much time with the Bridgertons, they truly feel like family to me. But they did it! I think I’m already completely charmed by Miss Sophie Baek, she’s just perfect.
The scene begins with Benedict intensely sketching the Lady in Silver, remembering her from the previous night. We then quickly switch to the lady’s perspective, seeing Sophie Baek remove her beautiful mask. Ha’s acting is captivating – her subtle, melancholic smile as she looks in the mirror immediately draws you to her character. Sophie is making her second mask for the ball, and with all the other preparations for Lady Penwood and her daughters, she’s completely exhausted. She’s so rushed she doesn’t even have time for scissors, so she uses a cleaver to cut the fabric. When the bell rings, summoning her, she jokingly pleads with her friends, Irma and Alfie, to pray she doesn’t lose her temper. They’re understandably concerned that she’s still clutching the cleaver, but I, as a viewer, am completely invested in the story!
Lady Penwood and her daughters immediately establish the classic Cinderella dynamic. Posy, the youngest daughter, is portrayed as kind and innocent, constantly mistreated by her mother and sister. Very quickly, Rosamund and Lady Penwood force Sophie to apologize for supposedly being jealous and ruining Rosamund’s mask. Sophie reluctantly complies, but is left feeling even more frustrated and angry as she returns to the kitchen. They’re going to another ball and don’t seem to appreciate the opportunity, except for Posy. Sophie just wishes she could experience that joy, even for one night. Alfie and Irma share a knowing look as whimsical music begins to play, and conveniently, they discover an extra mask! They then search the attic for a dress belonging to the late Lord Penwood’s sister. The final touch is a pair of silver shoes from Lady Penwood’s collection. Now that we know how Sophie became the mysterious Lady in Silver, the story returns to the present day!
Lady Penwood has noticed the damage to her silver shoes, and as punishment, Sophie must clean every pair of shoes owned by both Lady Penwood and Rosamund. This is a good opportunity to learn more about the characters, and the show flashes back to the day Lady Penwood first arrived at the Penwood home. It’s unsettling to see young Sophie lined up with the household staff on this important day, and Irma suddenly realizes how awkward the situation is. While it’s a terrible time to explain social rules to a child, Irma quickly tries to tell Sophie not to call Lord Penwood “Father” now that he’s married. Unsurprisingly, this doesn’t help young Sophie understand. Things get even worse when the new Lady Penwood asks Sophie for an introduction, after being left standing alone by her own father. He awkwardly replies that Sophie is his ward. This reveals that Sophie is considered illegitimate by high society, despite being the daughter of a lord – a detail that will likely become important later.
As Sophie and Benedict get to know each other, Benedict has asked for a favor. He wants Penelope to use her Whistledown persona to help him find a potential match. Penelope’s reaction when she immediately remembers him secretly meeting with the Lady in Silver—and that they were alone together—was telling. Penelope refuses to write about this woman in Whistledown to protect her reputation, so it looks like Benedict will have to officially enter the marriage market. I especially loved this scene because we got to see Eloise and Penelope reconnect, playfully teasing Benedict about his behavior and dismissing his claims that he can manage the mothers. Thankfully, he’s smart enough to admit he can’t handle the Queen! It’s now officially open season for the Bridgertons to find love!
Lady Bridgerton is deeply puzzled by her son’s sudden change in behavior. Rumors from Lady Whistledown, combined with seeing him dressed and ready for outings before noon (as Eloise points out), make her suspicious. He seems interested in finding a wife, and she can’t understand his motives despite watching him talk to potential matches in the park. Unbeknownst to their mother, Benedict is subtly trying to identify the mysterious Lady in Silver while chatting with young women at balls, focusing on their mouths to see if they match his memory. He continues this fruitless search, dragging Eloise to numerous events. Eventually, Eloise pleads with him to stop, explaining that she’s sacrificing her own desire to remain unmarried to help him. Benedict reluctantly agrees, but Eloise clearly suspects he’s not telling her everything.
Lady Bridgerton didn’t waste any time with this new information! Like any mother would, she immediately went to Penelope and demanded to know what Benedict had told her. When Penelope hesitated to reveal her sources, Violet firmly told her to sit down, and Penelope obeyed. It turns out Violet held the key to solving the mystery of Benedict’s glove! She skillfully played on her son’s potential cruelty for keeping information from her, implying he was hindering his own search for love. Of course, Lady Bridgerton recognized the glove’s crest as a style specific to the Penwood family – something from the ‘Old Lady Penwood’s’ time. Violet clearly breathed a sigh of relief when Benedict confirmed it wasn’t related to Rosamund.
Benedict’s visit successfully leads him to Penwood House, where he meets Posy, and we’re introduced to the disapproving Lady Penwood and Rosamund. The group wonders if there are other young women staying at the house, perhaps one who wore silver. Lady Penwood suddenly remembers a woman who rudely bumped into her at the ball – and she was wearing silver. Meanwhile, Sophie is completely oblivious to the identity of Posy’s visitor until she hears his voice. As Sophie and Alfie secretly listen, a Taylor Swift cover (“Enchanted”) plays. To be fair to them, Benedict is particularly charming as he listens to Posy talk about her unusual dreams. Alfie playfully encourages Sophie to go talk to him and tell him she’s been looking for him, acting like a supportive friend from a bygone era, and he’s surprisingly effective! Sophie almost throws open the door, but ultimately hesitates, worried Benedict won’t recognize her in her uniform.
Things get so frustrating that Sophie ends up cleaning shoes instead. Lady Penwood, however, sees this as a chance to investigate. She pushes Sophie to try on the silver shoes, and when they fit, she’s ready to share her conclusion. Sophie feels incredibly unappreciated after everything she’s done, and finally snaps. She confronts Lady Penwood, sarcastically asking why she would even bother doing something kind. Lady Penwood, though, has all the power. She admits taking Sophie in was a mistake and vows to fix it, also threatening to ruin Sophie’s reputation in town.
Benedict is feeling unsettled, though not in immediate danger. He admits to Eloise that he doesn’t believe he’s what anyone hopes for in a Bridgerton, and instead of taking her advice to stay, he goes on a drinking spree. He ends up waking up disoriented at the country estate of someone he knows, Phillip Cavender. Confused, he goes outside for air and witnesses Cavender and his friends attacking one of the maids. Before Benedict can help, another maid, Sophie, intervenes, helping her friend escape. The men then turn on Sophie, and Benedict steps in, knocking one of them out. He gets hurt in the process, but manages to force the attacker to apologize. Unfortunately, Sophie is subsequently fired as a result.
Things get much harder when Benedict helps Sophie up but doesn’t seem to recognize her – exactly what she feared would happen. Now jobless and feeling lost, Sophie starts walking to town, forced to remember the painful time after her father’s death and when Lady Penwood abandoned her. She can’t believe Lady Penwood is being honest about the will. Only time will reveal the truth. Meanwhile, Benedict attempts to help Sophie during her walk, offering her a ride in his carriage – and assuring her he treats all servants with respect. But Sophie can’t shake the feeling he might recognize her somehow. “How could you, sir? I’m just a maid,” she says, and it’s heartbreaking to watch as they disappear into the night.

Are these episodes trying to do too much? Or am I just frustrated that the conflict between Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte is always saved for last? It’s genuinely upsetting to see them at odds. Lady Danbury has been repeatedly dismissed – first at the ball, then during their chess game – and she’s finally had enough, leaving in a huff. The queen is devastated, and Brimsley is caught in the middle, desperately trying to convince Lady Danbury to return and apologize. He’s walking a tightrope, balancing loyalty to the queen with understanding Lady Danbury’s feelings, but she refuses to budge. That is, until Brimsley points out that she’s one of the few people left who remembers the king as he was, and the queen really needs her support. And yes, I definitely cried when Lady Danbury returned and the queen broke down, lamenting the king’s future death. I’m only human!
I absolutely love the storyline between Lord Marcus and Lady Bridgerton. It’s incredibly fun to watch Violet become attracted to Lord Marcus, even if she’s hesitant to simply spend time with him. And honestly, I’m all for her having a relationship with Lady Danbury’s brother – considering Lady Danbury herself had a past with Violet’s father! Friendships can be messy, to say the least.
Keep an eye on the Kilmartins! There are subtle clues suggesting they haven’t started a family yet, despite being married for a year. The scene where Lord John playfully interacts with young Lord Featherington, with Penelope observing his natural way with children and Francesca reacting noticeably, strongly hints at this.
