Okay, I’m trying really hard not to complain, but this month-long wait between seasons is killing me! And if you saw how this episode ended, you’ll understand why. It’s just… a lot to process, and I feel like we’re all feeling it as fans of the show.
So, let’s go back to how this all started. Benedict did manage to get Sophie a job, as he said he would! He just didn’t mention where – it’s at Bridgerton House, and he’s not even there all the time. Surely, this won’t be incredibly uncomfortable for either of them, will it? What Sophie doesn’t realize is that Lady Bridgerton wasn’t actually looking to hire anyone new, and she’s heard some not-so-pleasant rumors about Sophie. However, when Lady Bridgerton learns about Sophie’s bravery at My Cottage and that she used to work for the unpleasant Mr. Cavender, she offers her a position as a lady’s maid to Eloise and Hyacinth.
The next section is a charming montage showing the happy, everyday lives of the household staff, almost like a romantic movie. We see beautifully shot scenes of work – like perfectly pressed laundry – and sweet interactions between coworkers. Plus, Benedict did a really kind thing by getting Hazel, a young maid who was being bothered by Cavender, a job at the family’s mansion. What a great guy! It does make me wonder, though – the staff areas and kitchens seem incredibly large, especially compared to the house’s pretty exterior. Is this house unbelievably big, maybe even with hidden rooms? I’m not even going to question it, as long as it gives us space for a dramatic séance with the staff – I’m all for that!
Considering everything, things are progressing nicely. Benedict is back from his time in the countryside, newly motivated to find the mysterious Lady in Silver, much to Lady Bridgerton’s surprise – she’d actually thought he’d lost interest. It’s not uncommon for him to lack follow-through. Meanwhile, Sophie, who is secretly the Lady in Silver and working as a staff member, finds herself awkwardly carrying a tray of jellies when Gregory comes home from school. Benedict can’t help but gaze at her adoringly. Sophie quickly wins over Eloise with her knowledge of literature and impresses the household staff by revealing she once managed the entire Penwood estate. It’s no surprise that Lady Bridgerton later tells Lady Danbury she feels a strong desire to protect Sophie – and honestly, it’s completely understandable!
Okay, let me tell you, the ladies are fully invested in finding this Lady in Silver – Penelope, Francesca, Lady Bridgerton, Lady Danbury, and even Alice Mondrich, along with their husbands, are all on the hunt. Honestly, give me endless scenes of them sipping tea and spilling secrets! Though, Penelope’s internal struggle – is she writing for herself, or just echoing all the mothers in society? – feels a little sidelined when there’s a city-wide mystery unfolding. Seriously, half of London is searching! Meanwhile, Benedict is completely smitten with Sophie, and I’m yelling at my screen, ‘Those are the lips you should be focusing on, man!’ He’s trying to be respectful of her position, thankfully resisting a kitchen kiss – which is good, because she deserves so much more than a stolen moment amongst the pots and pans. She deserves a grand gesture, not a secret rendezvous!
Benedict is juggling two things: helping his mother sort through portraits of young women and trying to finish a painting – something he hasn’t done in a long time. He’s nearly finished, but the face of the woman in his painting remains a mystery, and he’s understandably frustrated. Luckily, the women around him offer a solution. Alice Mondrich finds a woman matching the description – dark hair, a poor dancer, and recently left London. It has to be her! There’s no one else it could be! Lady Bridgerton cleverly invites this woman, Miss Hollis, and her mother for tea, leaving Benedict… almost certain he’s found his model. It’s terrible timing to have tea served by the very woman he’s been searching for!
Benedict was so surprised to see Sophie, and increasingly unsure if Miss Hollis was who he thought she was, that he accidentally covered his teacup with his hand. This caused Sophie to spill hot tea all over him, abruptly ending the visit. As they left, Miss Hollis surprisingly mentioned she’d always wanted to see Bridgerton House and thanked them for their kindness. Violet was puzzled – hadn’t Miss Hollis seen it during the ball? But Miss Hollis cheerfully dismissed the idea as she headed out the door. (The author notes this was a plot device to create a reason for Sophie to later scold Benedict!)
Honestly, she’s just losing it, and I totally get why! Working for the Bridgertons is a dream job for her, but Benedict is making it unbearable. He’s everywhere, and it’s just… too much! She keeps wishing he’d just settle down with someone like Miss Hollis. It’s this constant reminder of their different worlds – she’s a maid, meant to clean up, while he’s a gentleman expected to find a wife. She says it herself – it’s just the way things are supposed to be, and ouch, that really hits hard! He tries to be understanding, saying she shouldn’t have to witness all the matchmaking and flirting, but that actually proves her point! She wants to be part of that world, enjoy the tea and the gossip, but it’s not her life, is it? She’s always cleaning up after everyone else. Ugh, my heart breaks for her, I really feel for her!
Honestly, I’m so relieved Miss Hollis is out of the picture! And I think Lady Bridgerton totally deserves this little rendezvous she’s planned with Lord Marcus. If it couldn’t be me, I’m genuinely happy for her. Mrs. Wilson is a genius, coming up with this whole family dinner at Francesa and John’s new place, and a convenient illness for Violet! She’s even giving the staff the night off so Lady Bridgerton can enjoy her tea without any prying eyes. “We all deserve to live, ma’am,” Mrs. Wilson said, and Violet really took that to heart. I’m practically bursting with happiness for her! It was hilarious watching her scout the perfect spot to… well, you know, pose for Lord Marcus. This isn’t just any tea, people! And let me tell you, Lord Marcus is… blessed in the posterior department. Judging by the look on Violet’s face and how eager she was for another meeting, I’m guessing he’s got a lot more going for him too!
Everyone was excited for a night off, and Sophie happily joined her friends—and John—at a local pub. She quickly realized she’d forgotten her purse, but planned to catch up with them soon. Meanwhile, Benedict was feeling down, trying to face reality after his mother urged him to stop living in a fantasy fueled by his feelings for the Lady in Silver. He bumped into Sophie on the stairs, and after a long look, they ended up kissing passionately. The attraction was intense, and Benedict didn’t hesitate to initiate things. As Sophie recovered from what was likely her first orgasm, Benedict began showering her with compliments, admitting he was captivated by her and that she was even better than he’d imagined. He then shockingly asked her to be his mistress. Sophie was stunned into silence until her friends came looking for her. It was definitely not the question she wanted to hear!
… See you next month, I guess? This is hellish! I am in hell!
On The Shelf
It didn’t surprise me at all that Lady Penwood was moving in next door to the Bridgertons, but I was definitely worried to see Varley there. He knows too much, and Lady Penwood has just gained a valuable addition to her household. Hopefully, she’ll be easier to deal with than Lady Featherington – that’s what I’m hoping for, anyway!
Francesca is still struggling to reach the peak of intimacy, and it’s causing some awkward moments. She’s been trying to be more playful, even attempting to initiate things with John in a rather clumsy way, which left her mortified. Thankfully, John is incredibly understanding and reassured her that she doesn’t need to fake pleasure for his sake – enjoying intimacy doesn’t always require an orgasm, and he loves her just as she is. Francesca admitted that even without reaching that peak, being close to John feels good. And then John’s cousin Michaela unexpectedly showed up, triggering a look of panic on Francesca’s face that, as someone familiar with same-sex attraction, I instantly recognized. But honestly, Michaela’s arrival has nothing to do with Francesca’s difficulties with orgasm!
Lady Danbury cleverly maneuvered things so the queen has a new lady-in-waiting, thanks to Alice Mondrich, but deliberately didn’t tell Alice she’d done it. She’s secretly working on a plan to help a friend—and herself even more. So far, this has led to Alice being hired and fired almost immediately, with no benefit to Lady Danbury. However, Alice is now upset, which Lady Danbury sees as proof Alice is the right person for the job – who else would challenge her? It’s a difficult position, but it’s Alice’s opportunity to prove herself. Lady Danbury expertly pitches this undesirable job as a great opportunity. Will, Alice’s husband, knew she was furious but was secretly pleased she wasn’t directing her anger at him. Ultimately, Lady Danbury seems to have passed the position onto Alice, but the narrator admits they couldn’t handle such a complicated situation!
Sophie is a wonderful maid to Eloise and Hyacinth, but she unintentionally makes Eloise act even more dismissive of Hyacinth’s hobbies. Eloise is just grateful to finally have someone to discuss books with, and she doesn’t want to waste time on what she considers trivial details like household items. Hyacinth, surprisingly mature, points out that while these topics might not interest Eloise, they matter to her, and it hurts to be ignored. This isn’t the first time someone has called Eloise selfish, and honestly, they’re right. I like Eloise, but she really can be self-centered!
