Brian Murphy, ‘Man About the House’ and ‘George and Mildred’ Star, Dies at 92

Brian Murphy, a well-known English actor and comedian, who gained fame for his roles in the ’70s sitcoms “Man About the House” and “George and Mildred,” passed away on Sunday at the age of 92.

Murphy’s representative shared the news with the BBC, describing him as a “happy and deeply kind soul.” His wife, actress Linda Regan from ‘Hi-de-Hi’, posted a picture of them hugging on X with the message: “My love for you will always remain. Rest in peace, my dear.

Born on September 25, 1932, on the Isle of Wight, Murphy started his life before serving in the military at RAF Northwood. After that, he ventured into acting and joined Joan Littlewood’s renowned Theatre Workshop. Later, he landed roles in various spy shows like “The Avengers” and “Callan”, as well as police series such as “Z-Cars” and “Dixon of Dock Green.” Eventually, Murphy was offered a part in the hit show “Man About the House.

The British sitcom “Man About the House” originally aired from 1973 to 1976 and featured Richard Murphy as George Roper, a laid-back landlord who lets a man share an apartment with two single ladies. This series was later adapted in the U.S. as the popular show “Three’s Company,” which broadcasted from 1977 to 1984. After “Man About the House” ended in 1976, a spinoff titled “George and Mildred” was produced, centering around Murphy’s character and his wife portrayed by Yootha Joyce. This series ran for five seasons until 1979, but production for a sixth season was halted when Joyce passed away due to liver failure in 1980.

Following “George and Mildred,” Murphy consistently graced television screens with roles in shows such as “The Incredible Mr. Tanner” (1981), “L for Lester” (1982), children’s series “Wizadora” (1993-1997), and the long-running “Last of the Summer Wine” (2003-2010) set in Yorkshire. In his later years, he also made appearances on BBC’s medical drama, “Holby City.

I’m the fortunate one who was married to Murphy for three decades, and I’m proudly joined by our two sons from my past relationships in carrying on his legacy.
