After viewing the Netflix documentary series American Murder: Gabby Petito, it’s likely that a similar thought has crossed your mind: Could Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, Brian Laundrie’s parents, be implicated in any wrongdoing?

The upcoming true crime title is the third installment in the American Murder series, delving into the Chris Watts and Laci Peterson cases previously explored, now shifting focus to the 2021 murder of Gabby Petito, a popular van life vlogger who met her tragic end at the hands of her partner, Brian Laundrie.

After law enforcement agencies like the police and FBI became involved, Brian chose to elude authorities before tragically taking his own life about two months following Gabby’s disappearance. Although there is no definitive explanation, a Netflix documentary details the sequence of events by interviewing Gabby’s acquaintances and relatives to provide a clearer understanding of the situation.

One significant aspect being highlighted is the role of Brian’s family, particularly his parents. According to FBI agent Kyle, on August 29 (a day after Gabby was last spotted), Brian had a lengthy 55-minute phone call with his mother Roberta. Not long after, Brian’s father Christopher reached out to a lawyer. Please be advised, the following details might be distressing for some readers.

The fact that they’ve consulted a lawyer about Gabby’s disappearance and the mystery surrounding it has sparked rumors suggesting they might have assisted their son in avoiding police. But, establishing criminal responsibility is significantly more intricate.

I reached out to Ben Michael, an attorney from M & A Criminal Defense Attorneys, for insights into the reasons behind this situation, as well as understanding why Christopher and Roberta Laundrie didn’t face arrest.

He shared with us that it’s quite improbable, though theoretically possible, that they may be charged with a crime in the future.

As a gamer putting on my detective hat, I’d say, “There wasn’t enough concrete proof linking me to that unfortunate incident involving Petito. That’s why no charges were initially filed against me.

During the search of their home, the ‘burn after reading’ letter penned by Roberta to Brian was discovered. In this letter, she communicated to her son that if he ever found himself in jail, she would bake a cake containing a file for him to use. Additionally, she mentioned that if he needed help disposing of a body, she would arrive with a shovel and garbage bags.

Even though evidence may seem solid on the surface, it can be challenging to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Michael pointed out that, regarding the letter in question, where Roberta Laundrie allegedly wrote to her son something like ‘if you need to bury a body, I’ll bring a shovel and garbage bags’, there was no way to definitively establish when that letter was actually penned.

The legal team claimed that the document was created prior to Petito’s demise and had no connection with it. The available evidence did not provide sufficient proof to establish this fact beyond any reasonable doubt.

Roberta and Christopher Laundrie did face lawsuits

Despite not being arrested or indicted for any offenses, the Laundries encountered two distinct legal proceedings initiated by Gabby’s parents, Joe Petito and Nichole Schmidt. These actions have now been resolved.

In March 2022, the initial lawsuit brought charges against Christopher and Roberta for deliberately causing emotional harm by sharing messages suggesting Gabby might still be found, despite knowing that she had already passed away.

In May 2022, a lawsuit over a wrongful death was brought forward, aimed at the Laundrie estate for compensation. This case was resolved initially in November of the same year, with a Florida court granting Gabby’s family $3 million.

The emotional distress legal case reached a resolution back in February 2024, but specifics about what exactly was agreed upon and the terms of the settlement are kept private.

Where are Christopher and Roberta now?

The Laundrie family was last captured on camera in June 2024, standing outside their home in Northport, Florida. This could imply that they have remained within the state since the investigation began.

They carry on living their lives away from public scrutiny, as they were once surrounded by crowds of demonstrators following the global media coverage of Gabby’s murder.

Netflix attempted to get a statement from both Christopher and Roberta, but in the final scene of American Murder: Gabby Petito, it’s stated that “The Lawyer for the Laundrie family chose not to offer a comment.

Last year at CrimeCon in Nashville, Nichole revealed that she had granted forgiveness to Brian. However, she made it clear that she was unable to do the same for Roberta, whom she labeled as “completely wicked.

In this instance, it’s me speaking directly: I, personally, forgive Brian. I felt it was crucial to free myself from the shackles of anger and resentment, and I don’t want his unforgivable action to dictate the remainder of my life,” she expressed (CNN).
