Brian Cox: ‘I’ve Never Found Kevin Spacey Abusive’ and ‘How Dare You Cancel Anybody?’

In a recent interview with The i Paper, Brian Cox voiced his support for Kevin Spacey, referring to him as an old friend and questioning the public’s judgment: “Who are we to cancel someone?” Spacey has been absent from Hollywood since multiple accusations of sexual misconduct emerged against him, starting in 2017.

Cox mentioned that Kevin is an old acquaintance of his. ‘Indeed, Kevin carried out certain actions… He also accomplished many remarkable tasks,’ Cox expressed. ‘However, I find this behavior quite underhanded and distasteful. It’s sneaky, petty, and simply wrong.’

Most people aren’t abusive, and I personally haven’t observed Kevin Spacey as being abusive. He may have been confused about his sexuality, which could explain some of his actions. This confusion seems to be a part of him grappling with his own identity and the challenges that come with it.”

By using simpler words and sentence structures, we can convey the same idea in an easier-to-understand manner.

Cox stated, ‘We’ve reached a point where people are saying, ‘That’s not good, he’s done, gone,’ and they call it ‘canceling.’ But what exactly is ‘canceling’? Who has the right to do that?'”

This version maintains the original sentiment while using simpler, more conversational language.

After the shocking revelations of Kevin Spacey’s alleged inappropriate behavior and sexual misconduct surfaced during the powerful #MeToo movement in 2017, a series of legal battles ensued against this two-time Academy Award winner. Fast forward to 2022, a New York jury acquitted him of molestation charges brought forth by actor Anthony Rapp, who had claimed sexual assault by Spacey back in the early ’80s when Rapp was just 14. In 2023, a U.K. court also declared Spacey not guilty on nine counts of sexual assault from four different complainants. Several other charges and lawsuits have since been withdrawn. Spacey maintains his innocence in all these allegations. As a movie reviewer, I find myself reflecting on the complexity of truth, justice, and our collective understanding of Hollywood’s past and present.

Last year, the two-part documentary titled “Unmasking Spacey” was broadcast and presented new accounts about Spacey’s alleged misconduct, such as claims he inappropriately touched another actor from “House of Cards” on set, and that he made a sexually aggressive advance towards a high school classmate.

Following the premiere of “Spacey Unmasked”, notable actors like Sharon Stone and Liam Neeson have expressed their opinions to The Telegraph, advocating for the reinstatement of Kevin Spacey in the broader film industry.

Stone expressed his eagerness to have Kevin back at work. He considers Kevin as a brilliant individual who is both sophisticated and amusing, excessively generous, and knows more about our profession than many of us could ever hope to know. Stone told The Telegraph that it’s evident that aspiring actors desire and desired to be in Kevin’s presence.

Stone commented, “It’s unfortunate that he is being accused of not accepting or understanding the fact that they manipulated and negotiated with him due to their hidden objectives, which they failed to achieve.

Neeson expressed his sadness upon hearing the accusations against Spacey, but he also emphasized that Kevin is a good person with strong character. He described Spacey as sensitive, articulate, open-minded, and having an excellent sense of humor. In the theater and on screen, Spacey is one of our best actors, Neeson stated. On a personal note, Neeson believes that our industry needs Spacey and has missed him dearly.

Kevin Spacey openly criticized the documentary about him in an interview with Dan Wootton. He also expressed regret about being excluded from Hollywood, stating: “No one in the Hollywood industry has offered a way back for me. There’s no educational material or steps to follow. I’ve been given no tasks to complete, nothing at all. It seems some people are satisfied with just banishing me forever. It feels like a life sentence.
