In 2008, AMC launched a show that revolutionized television. Though it concluded after five seasons in 2013, its influence is still felt today, over a decade later.
According to FlixPatrol, Breaking Bad is now a top 10 TV show on the Apple TV store, climbing to number 9 and surpassing Top Chef. The show is still available for streaming on Netflix.
Breaking Bad Revolutioned Drama TV
Vince Gilligan created the hit series Breaking Bad, which follows Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher played by Bryan Cranston. After receiving a lung cancer diagnosis, Walter decides to secure his family’s financial future by producing and selling methamphetamine. He teams up with a former student, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), and tries to keep his dangerous new life a secret from his wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn), who grows suspicious, and his brother-in-law, Hank (Dean Norris), a DEA agent.
Throughout its five seasons, the show became known for its quality and impact. It received significant recognition, winning 16 Primetime Emmy Awards. While it started slowly, Breaking Bad grew to become one of the most popular shows on cable television by its final season. It continues to be a hit on streaming platforms, attracting new viewers even today.
In 2019, Netflix released El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, which wrapped up the story for Jesse Pinkman after the end of the series. The show also had a popular spinoff called Better Call Saul, which aired for six seasons from 2015 to 2022. Better Call Saul‘s success actually led many viewers to revisit Breaking Bad, because the prequel added so much to the story that it changed how people experienced the original series.
The Breaking Bad Franchise Is Finished (For Now)
Even though the Breaking Bad universe has been incredibly successful, there aren’t currently any plans for new shows or movies. While some of the actors would be interested in revisiting their characters – particularly a spinoff focused on Gus Fring – creator Vince Gilligan has said he’d prefer to focus on developing original content, like his new series Pluribus on Apple TV+.
In 2023, Gilligan told Variety he wasn’t sure if there were more stories to tell, but he’s noticed other franchises being stretched too thin. He said he wouldn’t want to see that happen with this one, preferring not to name specific examples of overextended series.
Breaking Bad is available on the Apple TV store and it can also be found streaming on Netflix.
