Apple TV is planning a major adaptation of Brandon Sanderson’s epic Cosmere fantasy world. They announced on Wednesday that they’ll be making a movie series based on his Mistborn novels, and a TV show based on his Stormlight Archive saga – both set in the same universe.
The Hollywood Reporter says Apple TV’s deal with author Brandon Sanderson is unlike anything seen before. The upcoming Mistborn films and The Stormlight Archive TV series are just the beginning, with many more adaptations of Sanderson’s extensive fantasy worlds planned.
Apple TV is moving forward quickly with several projects, and one is already confirmed: Blue Marble will be producing the television series based on the Stormlight Archives.
Apple TV has secured the rights to Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere universe after he met with numerous Hollywood studios. The agreement is similar in scope to deals Warner Bros. made with J.K. Rowling for Harry Potter and George R.R. Martin for Game of Thrones. However, Apple TV is giving Sanderson an unusually high level of creative control over how his stories are adapted for the screen.
Sanderson will be the creative leader behind the live-action Cosmere adaptations. He’ll not only write and produce these projects, but also have final say over them. This level of control should prevent the kind of disagreements that have recently occurred between George R.R. Martin and the showrunner of House of the Dragon, Ryan Condal, which HBO had to help resolve.
Brandon Sanderson has become incredibly popular with readers. He’s sold over 50 million copies of his books and has successfully raised over $100 million through crowdfunding to support his writing, including a remarkable $42 million Kickstarter campaign for four new novels. He’s also so popular that the fantasy convention he hosts sells out completely every year.
I was really disheartened to hear Brandon Sanderson say he thinks his Cosmere universe might be too complex for a movie or TV series. It especially stung because it came after Prime Video decided to cancel their adaptation of The Wheel of Time – a series he so skillfully finished after Robert Jordan sadly passed away. It just feels like such a shame, knowing how amazing those stories are and how hard it might be to bring them to life on screen.
Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere Could Be the Next Westeros or Middle-earth
The Cosmere is a connected series of fantasy stories taking place across different worlds and time periods. It includes several complete novels like Elantris, Warbreaker, The Sunlit Lands, and Isles of the Emberdark. There’s also the Mistborn series, consisting of seven books divided into two parts, and The Stormlight Archive, a planned ten-book epic of which five have been released. Additionally, the Cosmere features the Hoid’s Trevalis series (currently three books), three White Sands graphic novels, and numerous short stories, many of which are compiled in Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection.
Brandon Sanderson explains on his website that his Cosmere books are all part of one larger universe, sharing a common creation story, rules for how the universe works, and a consistent system of magic. While the underlying principles are complex, it is possible to understand how magic connects across all the different worlds. Because these worlds are linked, characters sometimes appear in multiple series. You don’t need to be aware of these connections to enjoy any single book, but attentive readers will occasionally find fun cameos and references to characters traveling between worlds.
The Mistborn series is about Allomancers – people with magical abilities powered by metals. The story follows their fight to take down a cruel and oppressive empire.
Okay, so I just finished diving into The Stormlight Archive, and let me tell you, it’s a wild ride! It’s set in this incredibly imaginative world – part of a larger universe the author’s built, called the Cosmere. Think epic magical storms, noble knights, and seriously creepy monsters known as Voidbringers. What’s really interesting is the way the story unfolds through the eyes of a bunch of different characters who, at first, don’t seem to have anything to do with each other. It’s a complex setup, but it totally works!
