Brandon Sanderson Thoroughly Explains Why Apple TV Won 25+ Book Fantasy Universe In Very Competitive Bid

After reaching an unprecedented agreement with Apple TV, fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson shared his reasons for choosing the streaming service to bring his Cosmere universe books to life.

The incredibly popular author Brandon Sanderson sold the rights to his vast, 25+ book world after discussions with several major film and TV studios. He ultimately reached a deal with Apple TV that gives him an unprecedented level of creative control – he’ll write, produce, consult on, and approve all adaptations. This is more control than even established authors like George R.R. Martin and J.K. Rowling have over their own projects at Warner Bros. Discovery. The initial plan is to turn Sanderson’s Mistborn series into a television show and The Stormlight Archive into big-screen movies.

Sanderson shared on his YouTube channel that he was drawn to Apple TV’s willingness to let him have significant creative control over the adaptations of his work. He also said he felt a strong connection with the company’s overall approach, describing the “vibe” as positive. He emphasized that he views their relationship as a true partnership and respects their careful selection of projects. You can find his full comments below.

I’ve been working towards this for years. Earlier this year, in May, I went to Hollywood to present my ideas to all the major streaming services and studios. I had some fantastic meetings and things felt different this time. I was speaking directly with studio leaders and meeting incredibly talented people. Ultimately, multiple companies wanted the rights to both Mistborn and Stormlight. I chose to go with Apple. There were several reasons why. I enjoyed the overall feeling of my meetings with them – every conversation was positive. While having creative control was a factor, it was more about the partnership, and Apple felt like the right fit. I’ve been impressed with how Apple TV+ has carefully released quality content.

Sanderson has confirmed plans to bring both Mistborn to television and The Stormlight Archive to the big screen, though he admits these plans could evolve during development. He’ll be a co-showrunner on the Mistborn TV series and is currently searching for a partner to work alongside him.

Taking charge of these projects will help ensure they stay true to the original stories, but it will also demand a lot of Sanderson’s time and attention. He’s reassured fans that this won’t delay The Stormlight Archive or the 2028 release of Mistborn Ghostbloods, explaining that he’s committed to working with Hollywood to get these adaptations right. He also asked for patience, noting that no other key people are currently involved in the Apple TV adaptations, and hinted that more details will be shared soon.

These projects won’t be ready next year, but I’m optimistic about how they’re progressing. I’ll be sharing my process of writing the screenplay, including the challenges of adapting a very long book into a movie that’s about two hours long. That’s what I’ll be focusing on for the next six months or so.

His recent comment about being “confident this time” likely refers to the earlier attempt to make a Mistborn movie, which ultimately fell through. Sanderson announced on his blog in December 2024 that the movie adaptation was cancelled. Now, as a co-showrunner, writer, and producer for a new Mistborn series on Apple TV+, he has more control over the adaptation and believes he can finally bring it to life.

Apple TV+ is earning a reputation for excellent shows, especially in science fiction with series like Severance, Silo, Pluribus, For All Mankind, and Murderbot. Now, with plans to adapt the popular Cosmere novels by Brandon Sanderson, Apple TV+ is also becoming a major player in fantasy television and film. This is a big win for the streamer, putting it ahead of competitors like Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Max.
