Box Office: ‘Wicked’ Is Popular, Soaring to Third-Biggest Opening of 2024; ‘Gladiator II’ Entertains $60 Million Debut

“As a moviegoer who’s been following this industry since the days of black and white TV, I can say with confidence that these two blockbusters are just what the doctor ordered! ‘Wicked’ is a magical return to the world of Oz, proving yet again that musical adaptations can rule the box office. And ‘Gladiator II’, well, it’s like stepping into the Colosseum all over again with a stellar cast.

The movie titled ‘Wicked’ is expected to rake in a significant amount of money, potentially reaching the third-highest domestic opening of 2024, with projections pointing towards a weekend earnings of around $117 million. This would only trail behind ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ ($211 million) and ‘Inside Out 2’ ($151 million) among this year’s releases. Meanwhile, Paramount’s ‘Gladiator II’ is also expected to perform well, with a projected opening weekend of $60 million, placing it second. With cinemas experiencing a dearth of major hits during the fall season, these two debuts are likely to be warmly welcomed.

As a movie critic, I’m thrilled to share that “Wicked” raked in an impressive $46.7 million on its opening day, spread across 3,888 theaters nationwide, including early-week screenings. While this figure places it as the third-largest opening day of the year, it’s important to note a caveat: “Wicked” benefited from $7.9 million in earnings from Monday and Wednesday previews. Adjust for these early screenings, and its opening day gross falls slightly behind “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which earned $41.5 million on its first day. Nonetheless, the success of “Wicked” is a testament to the enduring appeal of the beloved Broadway musical.

As a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to report that Universal’s investment in “Wicked” has certainly paid off! After months of strategic marketing during fall, this Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande musical is undeniably the blockbuster of the season that the studio had envisioned. The box office earnings are soaring, and the film’s play in premium large-format auditoriums is contributing significantly to these numbers. Despite “Gladiator II” dominating the Imax showtimes, “Wicked” is holding its own and making a strong impact on the big screen.

Fans and critics alike have shown great enthusiasm for Jon M. Chu’s revisit to Oz, with Cinema Score even giving it an A grade after surveying early moviegoers. The PG-rated “Wicked” may face some competition from “Moana 2,” debuting next week, for family audiences and musical enthusiasts. However, its strong reception and numerous award nominations suggest that it will maintain success in the long run. It’s also worth noting that Universal plans to release another $150 million “Wicked” production, which continues the story from the Broadway show’s second act, during the same pre-Thanksgiving weekend next year.

Over the weekend, “Gladiator II” – Paramount’s new, mature-rated movie – managed to secure a second spot on domestic box office charts. The film earned approximately $22 million from 3,573 screenings on Friday and previews, with expectations of grossing around $60 million for its North American premiere. This would mark a record-breaking opening for director Ridley Scott, surpassing the $58 million he made with his 2001 thriller “Hannibal.” Interestingly, both films are sequels long in the making, following winners of the Best Picture Oscar. Additionally, if these numbers hold, it would also be the largest opening for an R-rated film in November.

With an enormous production cost of $250 million and a worldwide advertising expenditure, “Gladiator II” is counting on strong box office revenue during the remaining weeks of the year, as well as robust foreign ticket sales. It has made a promising debut internationally over the past week, earning more than $131 million in 63 markets around the globe.

As a fan, I’m quite optimistic about the upcoming swords-and-sandals sequel, but it might not capture the same level of widespread adoration as “Wicked.” On Cinema Score, it’s receiving a B grade, which suggests a more mature, gritty take on the genre. However, history has shown that serious epics can thrive even without overwhelming audience approval. The original “Gladiator” was the third-highest-grossing domestic release of 2000, and while this sequel may not reach such heights, it could still be a compelling journey back to Rome. Keep an eye on its performance as the competition in the marketplace intensifies leading up to Thanksgiving.

In “Gladiator II”, Paul Mescal steps into the Colosseum in pursuit of vengeance as the Roman empire faces imminent ruin. Connie Nielsen reappears from the first movie, while Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and acclaimed actor Denzel Washington join the ensemble cast.

This weekend, Angel Studios is returning to cinemas with “Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Spy, Assassin,” their latest Euro-era production. As its title suggests, this movie portrays Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who served as a pastor, spy, and assassin during that time. The film, available in English, delves into the life of this devout Christian and his opposition to the emergence of the Third Reich, eventually leading him to participate in a plot aimed at assassinating Adolf Hitler. Angel Studios obtained the rights to this Todd Komarnicki-directed movie back in 2023.

As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that “Bonhoeffer” is making waves and climbing up the domestic box office charts, currently vying for the fourth spot. Over its opening weekend at approximately 1,900 screens, it managed to earn around $2.2 million on Friday and previews, with projections of a three-day total of about $4.4 million.

As a movie enthusiast, I found myself enjoying “Red One,” Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ action-packed holiday blockbuster, over the past few days. On Friday alone, it managed to earn an impressive $3.3 million. Projections suggest that it will bring in around $13 million for its second week in theaters. With this, the domestic total cumulative box office earnings of “Red One” are set to exceed $52 million after just 10 days since its release.

The Amazon MGM movie “Red One,” which cost $250 million to produce, isn’t suffering as much as a regular studio film might under similar circumstances. However, its box office performance has dropped by 58% since its opening weekend, making it doubtful that it can compete with more popular titles. Even though the movie might boost streaming viewership on Amazon Prime Video, it’s worth wondering if Amazon would invest such a large sum again in a potential franchise-starter, given the increasing need for streaming services to focus on profitability and reduce costs.

In its fifth week in theaters, ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ is expected to earn an additional $4 million, bringing its total to close to the top five box office earners. For much of the past month, this Sony Marvel spin-off has held the title as the highest-grossing film. As it nears the end of its run, ‘The Last Dance’ has amassed a domestic total of over $130 million, falling short of the $213 million final earnings of its predecessor ‘Let There Be Carnage.’ However, overseas, ‘The Last Dance’ has surpassed $300 million and continues to grow, outperforming the international box office total of ‘Carnage’ by a significant margin.
