Box Office: ‘Paddington in Peru’ Nears $100 Million Overseas, ‘Dog Man’ Fetches $40 Million Globally

The third movie featuring Paddington, the bear fond of marmalade, is approaching the $100 million mark in earnings at foreign box offices.

The movie, set to premiere in the U.S. and Canada on Valentine’s Day, has already grossed $93.2 million from 51 foreign countries. This is a good start for the family film, although its two preceding “Paddington” installments each made $249 million worldwide. As such, the third movie still needs to earn more to reach those figures. Fortunately, it hasn’t been released yet in key markets like France (Feb 5), South Korea (Feb 19), Italy (Feb 20), Spain (Feb 21), and Japan (May 9).

The initial two movies from the “Paddington” film series, inspired by the popular children’s books written by British author Michael Bond, have amassed over half a billion dollars at worldwide box offices. StudioCanal took charge of developing and entirely funding the third film, while Sony was in charge of distribution in key regions like the U.S., U.K., and France.

In this movie, directed by Dougal Wilson, we find that the narrative follows Paddington’s journey, hinted at by the title. This time, he travels to Peru to see Aunt Lucy who lives at a retirement home for bears. Accompanied by the Brown family, they encounter an unforeseen adventure that takes them through the dense Amazon rainforest and up the towering peaks of Peru. Ben Whishaw and Imelda Staunton reprise their roles as Paddington and Aunt Lucy respectively. The live-action cast is completed with Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Antonio Banderas, and Olivia Colman.

In other international cinemas, “Dog Man” from Universal and DreamWorks Animation didn’t show much strength, earning only $4.2 million in its initial weekend across 30 countries. Spain was the most successful region with $1 million, closely followed by Mexico with $699,000. Conversely, the film performed significantly better in North America, raking in $36 million to begin with, resulting in a total global gross of $40 million. Despite lower-than-anticipated earnings overseas, the well-reviewed “Dog Man” was made at a relatively low cost of $40 million, meaning it doesn’t require an overly extended theatrical run to turn a profit.

In my opinion, as a movie reviewer, “Captain Underpants: Mega Blissystrike” is an animated adventure that takes inspiration from Dav Pilkey’s popular children’s graphic novel series of the same name. The story centers around a human police officer who, after being injured in the line of duty, undergoes a bizarre transformation – he’s united with his loyal canine partner! Joining the cast are comedians Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, and Isla Fisher, lending their voices to this exciting tale.

Although “Dog Man” took the top spot at the domestic box office, it started off behind another new release, the R-rated sci-fi thriller from Warner Bros. and New Line titled “Companion,” in international markets. However, it’s important to note that “Companion” is being shown in twice as many countries as “Dog Man” at this time.

In its debut, the movie titled “Companion” raked in $5.5 million from 60 foreign markets. Adding the $9.5 million it made domestically, this film with a production budget of $10 million has garnered a total of $15 million globally so far. Starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, “Companion” is a unique romantic tale that unfolds when a group of friends’ weekend retreat turns tumultuous upon discovering one of the attendees is actually a companion robot.
