Turns out, “Mufasa” just had to wait to be king.

The Disney movie “The Lion King’s Prequel”, titled “Mufasa”, has surpassed other films at the domestic box office, having outrun “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” for three weekends in a row. Initially, “Mufasa” triumphed over the holiday season, but “Sonic 3” managed to stay slightly ahead during regular weekends. In its third weekend, “Mufasa” earned an extra $24 million from 3,925 North American theaters, showing a minimal decrease of 26% compared to its previous performance. To date, the family-friendly musical adventure about the future ruler of Pride Lands has made $168 million domestically and $476 million worldwide. This is impressive revenue, considering the initial struggles it faced in cinemas. However, “Mufasa” was expensive to produce, with a budget exceeding $200 million. Since theater owners take half of the earnings, the film needs to maintain its strong performance into the new year to cover its production costs.

In its third week on the big screen, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” moved to second place with earnings of $21.2 million from 3,746 cinemas, marking a 42% decrease compared to the previous weekend. So far, this third installment about a speedy, blue anthropomorphic hedgehog has earned $187.5 million domestically and $312 million internationally. This latest addition to the Sega video game-inspired series has already surpassed the earnings of the original 2020 “Sonic the Hedgehog” ($148 million domestically, $319 million globally) and is well on its way to outperforming the 2022 sequel “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” ($190 million domestically, $405 million worldwide). With this weekend’s earnings, the Sonic franchise has now accumulated over $1 billion in global box office revenue. A fourth film is already in production.

Brian Robbins, president and CEO of Paramount Pictures, declared that the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ series has grown into an indomitable cultural juggernaut with boundless possibilities. With each new installment in Sonic’s journey, we are immensely proud and thrilled to keep producing tales and characters that strike a chord with global audiences.

2025‘s early months typically see a slow pace at the box office, and this trend holds true for its start as well. Movies that were initially released during Thanksgiving and Christmas, such as “Nosferatu,” “Moana 2,” “Wicked,” and “A Complete Unknown,” continued to generate revenue and ended up making it onto the North American box office charts.

In its second week of release, ‘Nosferatu’, Robert Eggers’ take on the classic ‘Dracula’ tale, earned $13.1 million across 3,132 cinemas. Since its debut on Christmas Day, this Focus Features production featuring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok has proven to be a successful independent film, amassing a total of $69.4 million.

Disney’s “Moana 2” earned the fourth position in its sixth weekend, raking in $12.3 million, pushing its North American total to $425 million and worldwide earnings to $960 million. This animated sequel, initially intended for streaming, was later shifted to cinemas, and is expected to surpass the $1 billion mark in the approaching weeks. Meanwhile, Universal’s “Wicked” adaptation ended the top five with a weekend take of $10.2 million, raising its earnings in the U.S. and Canada to $450 million, and over $650 million globally.

The movie ‘A Complete Unknown,’ featuring Timothée Chalamet as the composer behind ‘Like a Rolling Stone,’ continued to hold strong at number 6 and earned $8.1 million from 2,835 screens in its second weekend. In total, it has made $41.7 million domestically since its release.
