Box Office: ‘Mufasa’ Leaps to $671 Million Globally, ‘Paddington in Peru’ Crosses $100 Million Milestone Overseas

The photorealistic “Lion King” prequel, titled “Mufasa,” continues to demonstrate its strong drawing power at the box office, earning a total of $671 million from worldwide ticket sales.

Over the past weekend, the film earned an additional $8.5 million from 52 foreign countries. After eight weekends in cinemas, Disney’s hit musical has generated $235 million within the U.S. and $432.9 million internationally, making it the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2024 so far. With little competition, global earnings are nearing $700 million. This is a positive shift in box office performance following a modest beginning prior to Christmas, although it’s still far from the astronomical figures achieved by its predecessor, Jon Favreau’s 2019 remake of “The Lion King” ($1.66 billion worldwide). However, this recovery is crucial for Disney as “Mufasa” was a costly production, estimated at over $200 million and another $100 million in promotions.

Reaching another significant achievement, the worldwide hit “Paddington’s Peruvian Adventure,” the third installment featuring the beloved marmalade-loving bear, has grossed over $100 million at international box offices. This animated family film has amassed an impressive total of $104 million overseas before its U.S. and Canadian premiere on February 14. Interestingly, the first two films in the “Paddington” series, inspired by the classic children’s books penned by British author Michael Bond, have garnered significantly more success internationally than domestically. It appears that the third movie will follow suit in this trend. StudioCanal financed and produced the entirety of the threequel, with Sony overseeing distribution in key territories such as North America (U.S. and Canada) and Latin America.

In simpler terms, the Universal action comedy “Love Hurts,” featuring Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose, didn’t go as planned with a disappointing earnings of $1.075 million across 31 countries. The film even struggled in its domestic markets, the U.S. and Canada, earning only $5.8 million. As a result, the movie’s total global earnings are quite low at $6.8 million. Critics and viewers have been unimpressed with “Love Hurts,” which was made for approximately $18 million. However, since it had a relatively affordable budget, it doesn’t need to earn much more in theaters to become profitable.

In a different phrasing, the globally distributed animated movie titled “Dog Man” failed to make a significant impact in 41 foreign markets, earning only $6.5 million. This family-friendly film premiered in the UK and Ireland this weekend, raking in $4 million. However, it struggled to perform well elsewhere. The movie about a crime-fighting dog has grossed $54.1 million in domestic sales and $66 million worldwide, but these figures fall short of its budget of $40 million.
