The remake of “Nosferatu,” which is based on Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and falls under the gothic horror genre, generated a revenue of $100 million at the international box office.
remarkably, the movie produced by Focus Features and helmed by director Robert Eggers, has managed to surpass a significant milestone just 10 days after its release. It’s quite rare for art house films to reach this mark in the post-pandemic era at all.
The film titled “Nosferatu,” featuring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok and co-starring Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult, garnered $26.8 million over the weekend at foreign box offices in 61 markets across 6,317 screens. Since its release on Christmas Day, it has also made an additional $69.4 million domestically, bringing its total earnings to $100.3 million. Despite its high production cost of $50 million (typical for an indie), the movie seems to have the potential longevity required to recoup its costs and turn a profit.
Moreover, “Moana 2” from Disney is swimming towards a box office milestone. With earnings of $960.5 million already in the bank and another $1 billion on the horizon, this animated sequel seems poised to reach that mark soon. Originally intended for streaming, it was later shifted to cinemas. Last weekend, it grossed $26 million from 52 territories, and has accumulated a total of $535 million internationally so far. If this trend continues, “Moana 2” is expected to become Disney’s third film in 2024 to enter the billion-dollar club, joining “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.
In simpler terms, “The Lion King” remake by Disney continues to rule the box office as it once more took the top spot on weekend earnings charts. The prequel focusing on Mufasa, the future ruler of Pride Lands, collected an additional $53.5 million from 52 foreign markets, bringing its international earnings to $307 million. To date, “Mufasa” has made a total of $476.4 million and is expected to soon surpass the $500 million mark. Given its high production cost exceeding $200 million, Disney hopes that “Mufasa” will stay popular until the end of the year to cover its expenses.
In simple terms, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” from Paramount didn’t trail too far behind “Mufasa” with an earnings of $51.2 million from 61 international markets. The third movie about the fast-moving blue creature has earned a total of $148 million overseas and $336 million globally. After this weekend’s earnings, the Sonic franchise as a whole has surpassed the $1 billion mark in global box office collections across three films. A fourth Sonic movie is currently being developed.
In other locations, the “Wicked” adaptation by Universal earned $10.8 million across 81 international markets during the weekend, pushing its global total to $681 million and a staggering $230.5 million from overseas box offices. This latest milestone means that “Wicked” has now surpassed the 2008 film adaptation of “Mamma Mia,” with earnings of $611 million, making it the highest-grossing Broadway production adaptation in global box office history. Universal is now tasked with maintaining audience enthusiasm for all things associated with pink and green as the second installment of their expensive musical, “Wicked: For Good,” premieres in November.
