Box Office: Mel Gibson and Mark Wahlberg’s ‘Flight Risk’ Flies to No. 1 With $12 Million in Yet Another Glacial Weekend

In its initial weekend, the action-packed thriller “Flight Risk,” helmed by Mel Gibson and featuring Mark Wahlberg as a somewhat unstable, balding aviator, topped the charts with a gross of $12 million from 3,161 cinemas across North America.

Once again, Lionsgate claims the top spot at the box office with their latest release, “Den of Thieves 2: Panthera,” marking their second consecutive number one debut. This comes as no surprise during January’s typically slow period at the box office. In contrast, Disney’s “Mufasa” film, released six weeks ago, took second place with an additional $8.7 million from 3,420 cinemas, pushing its North American total to $221 million and its global earnings to $626.7 million.

Lionsgate’s new movie, “Den of Thieves 2: Panthera,” was the most watched film this week, making it their second consecutive number one debut. This is common during January when there aren’t many big movies. Disney’s “Mufasa” film earned an extra $8.7 million in its sixth week at the box office, increasing its total earnings to over $221 million in North America and more than $626.7 million worldwide.

The movie titled “Flight Risk,” which carries a hefty price tag of $25 million, must remain in theaters for its run to be profitable. However, this could prove difficult given the film’s poor reception from both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an abysmal 21% average rating, while CinemaScore gave it a mediocre “C.” This is Gibson’s first directorial project since his 2016 Oscar-nominated film “Hacksaw Ridge,” following several off-screen controversies. Interestingly, Wahlberg and Gibson have teamed up again, having recently worked together on the 2022 release “Father Stu,” a faith-based drama that Wahlberg both directed and funded himself.

According to David A. Gross, who is in charge of Franchise Entertainment Research, audiences are attending the movies, yet they’re not finding them particularly engaging or enjoyable.

In sixth position during its opening weekend, Steven Soderbergh’s supernatural thriller “Presence” earned $3.4 million across 1,750 theaters. This movie, previously acquired by Neon at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, received favorable reviews from critics (87% approval on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences gave it a mediocre grade (“C+”) according to CinemaScore. In “Presence,” Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan portray characters who are being haunted by an unseen force in their new home, as seen through the eyes of the spectral entity.

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve got to share some exciting news about Sony’s R-rated buddy comedy “One of Them Days.” Over the weekend, it moved down a spot to take third place with an impressive box office collection of $7.75 million from 2,675 locations. This is only a minor 34% drop compared to its opening weekend, which speaks volumes about the film’s strong appeal. The dynamic duo of Keke Palmer and SZA are delivering stellar performances that have sparked positive word-of-mouth among audiences. After just two weekends in theaters, “One of Them Days” has already raked in a remarkable $24.8 million!

Over the weekend, the horror thriller “The Wolf Man,” produced by Universal and Blumhouse, dropped to position 7 with earnings of $2 million from 3,354 theaters. The movie’s ticket sales plunged by 72% compared to its initial, lackluster performance, raising its domestic total to $17.4 million. Unfortunately, “The Wolf Man” isn’t regaining traction in foreign markets, where it garnered an additional $3.5 million from 75 countries, pushing its global earnings to $27 million. The movie was made on a budget of $25 million.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got to share some exciting news about “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” In its sixth week, this family-friendly adventure brought in an impressive $5.5 million, placing it fourth at the box office.

Globally, the film has raked in a staggering $425 million, with a whopping $226 million of that coming from North America alone. This makes “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” the highest-grossing movie in the series, surpassing both the original 2020 release and its 2022 sequel in terms of worldwide earnings. So if you haven’t seen it yet, maybe it’s time to catch up with our speedy blue friend!

In simple terms, “Moana 2” from Disney finished in the top five with an additional $4.1 million, bringing its total earnings to a staggering $448 million over nine weeks in cinemas. This animated sequel, initially conceived as a series for Disney+, has now grossed over $1 billion worldwide.
