As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous cinematic universes, I must admit that my anticipation for “Kraven the Hunter” was initially high. The prospect of delving into the origin story of one of Spider-Man’s most iconic villains, under the direction of J.C. Chandor, seemed like a promising venture. However, the recent box office predictions have left me feeling less than enthused.
Forget the web-slinging, it’s time for some big-game hunting.
As I sat down to pen my thoughts on “Kraven the Hunter,” Sony’s latest addition to their Spider-Man roster and potentially the last, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the impressive $2 million it raked in during its Thursday preview screenings at the box office. It seems this film is off to a promising start!
The anticipated Sony film featuring R-rated supervillains is projected to earn a modest $13 million to $15 million during its opening weekend, marking one of the poorest debuts for a Spider-Man spinoff in Sony’s history. This amount would even fall below the critically panned “Madame Web,” which opened with $15.3 million earlier this year. The COVID-19 pandemic and recent Hollywood strikes have caused delays in the production of “Kraven” and significantly increased its budget from $90 million to a staggering $110 million.
In the movie directed by J.C. Chandor, Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays the role of Sergei Kravinoff, a character well-known to Spider-Man fans as the formidable big-game hunter Kraven. The storyline delves into Kraven’s background and his intricate bond with his father, along with his ruthless crime lord father figure Nikolai (played by Russell Crowe), which propels him towards transforming into a muscular, leather jacket-donning villain. The ensemble cast includes Ariana DeBose, who won an Oscar, as Kraven’s love interest Calypso; Fred Hechinger, famous for his role in “Gladiator II,” as Chameleon, Kraven’s half-brother and a skilled disguise artist; Alessandro Nivola as the resilient crime boss Rhino; and Christopher Abbott as the mercenary Foreigner.
In its fourth week of release, Universal’s musical “Wicked” is expected to compete with Sony Pictures’ “Kraven” for the second spot at the box office, earning between $18 million and $20 million. Additionally, Warner Bros.’ animated “Lord of the Rings” prequel, titled “The War of the Rohirrim,” will debut this weekend, aiming for a launch of $6 million to $7 million. However, Disney’s “Moana 2” is anticipated to continue its reign at the box office for a third consecutive week, with estimated earnings of $25 million to $28 million this weekend.
