Who released “Dog Man”? It was Universal Pictures who did so, and the event is lively, pulsating even, as the studio is enjoying a successful debut with DreamWorks Animation’s production, which raked in $10.8 million on its opening day and preview screenings. This marks the highest single-day gross for this young year so far.
In approximately 3,885 venues, the movie “Dog Man” is expected to earn around $35 million during its opening weekend, surpassing the $23 million debut of “Captain America: The First Avenger,” a film adaptation of another series of graphic novels by children’s author Dav Pilkey, which was released by 20th Century Fox (now owned by Disney) in 2017.
The initial performance of ‘Dog Man’ has been impressive, given that it was made with a budget of $40 million – significantly less than the usual animated studio productions. Critics and audiences alike seem to appreciate it, as indicated by positive reviews and an A grade from Cinema Score, based on feedback from opening crowds. With no major family-friendly releases since ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’, which premiered before Christmas, ‘Dog Man’ is reaping the benefits of this gap in the market. The only competition for young viewers in the near future seems to be Marvel’s ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ rated PG-13, which is due on February 14.
The movie “Dog Man” lives up to its name, featuring a unique character who’s a blend of a former police officer and his faithful dog companion. Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, and Isla Fisher provide the voices, with Peter Hastings directing and even contributing the vocal effects for our hero.
“Dog Man” is a movie about a special character who’s half man, half dog. It’s led by voice actors including Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, and Isla Fisher. Peter Hastings directed it and also did the sounds for our main hero.
In the second spot, the chilling satire “Companion” garnered an estimated $4 million in earnings from both Friday screenings and previews, played at 3,285 locations. This Warner Bros. and New Line production was made with a modest budget of $10 million, placing it in a good spot to make a profit over the coming weeks. The film has potential to open above $10 million, thanks to favorable reviews, and this has helped generate some excitement. The B+ rating from Cinema Score is impressive for a horror movie as well. “Companion” features Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, telling the story of a peaceful woodland retreat that descends into chaos when a guest’s malfunctioning cyborg causes trouble.
In third place, I found myself standing strong after seven weeks in the spotlight – “Mufasa: The Lion King.” On Friday alone, it pocketed around $1.3 million. Despite “Dog Man” stealing the limelight from family audiences, Disney’s CG-animated musical has managed to maintain its grip on the market. This weekend, it slipped only 23%, hinting at a possible surpassing of a massive $230 million domestic total by Sunday. Interestingly, my initial release back in December was a softer start compared to Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” However, I have managed to hold my ground better through January and am now on track to surpass the domestic total gross of “Sonic 3,” which is also aiming for $230 million this weekend.
In its third week, the comedy “One of Them Days” starring Keke Palmer and SZA, distributed by Sony, is expected to bring in an additional $5.8 million. By the end of this coming Sunday, the film’s total earnings will have reached approximately $34 million.
In simpler terms, the movie “Flight Risk” by Lionsgate, which debuted at number one last week, is predicted to drop about 54% in its second week. There’s a strong possibility it will surpass $20 million domestically within its first ten days of release.
