Beware, “Wolf Man” and “Better Man,” as the box office dominance seems set to shift to “Dog Man.
On its opening night previews, the fresh collaboration between Universal and DreamWorks Animation has raked in approximately $1.36 million at the box office. Anticipated earnings range from $25 million to $30 million, with some estimates reaching as high as $40 million, reflecting a strong appetite for family-friendly entertainment.
In the cheerful universe of “Captain Underpants,” the character Dog Man takes center stage, created and steered by Peter Hastings. This half-canine, half-police officer embarks on thrilling escapades as he combats crime. Interestingly, Dog Man doesn’t utter a word himself; however, his feline adversary, Petey the cat, is voiced by Pete Davidson. Li’l Petey, Dog Man’s trusty sidekick, is brought to life by Lucas Hopkins. The police chief, known as Chief, is voiced by Lil Rel Howery. Other notable voices in the cast include Isla Fisher, Billy Boyd, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Root, Poppy Liu, Laraine Newman, Cheri Oteri, Melissa Villaseñor and several others.
The “Dog Man” book series for children, penned by the writer of “Captain Underpants”, Dav Pilkey, debuted in 2016. Consisting of a total of 13 books, it has sold over 60 million copies globally. Meanwhile, an animated adaptation of “Captain Underpants” was released in 2017, which earned $23.8 million on its opening and ultimately accumulated $73 million domestically and a total of $125 million worldwide.
Additionally, the weekend will see the release of “Companion,” an R-rated sci-fi thriller produced by Warner Bros. and New Line. The film features Jack Quaid, Sophie Thatcher, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillen, Rupert Friend, Jaboukie Young-White, Matt McCarthy, Marc Menchaca, Woody Fu, and others in leading roles. Projected earnings suggest it could generate between $8 million to $10 million domestically, along with an additional $5 million from international markets. This comes after a production budget of $10 million.
