Box Office: ‘Dog Man’ Chases $30 Million Opening Weekend, Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Companion’ Targets $10 Million

In simpler terms, “Dog Man,” an animated film taking place within the “Captain Underpants” world, is expected to make its mark at the box office by the end of this weekend, with its playful antics and amusing exploits.

It’s anticipated that the Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s dog-centric crime-fighting movie will earn between $25 million and $30 million during its debut weekend at approximately 3,800 North American cinemas. Some analysts predict that due to strong word of mouth and a high demand for family entertainment, the opening weekend sales could potentially reach up to $40 million. To put things into perspective, “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie,” released by 20th Century Fox in 2017, opened with $23.8 million and eventually grossed $73 million domestically and $125 million worldwide.

The movie ‘Dog Man,’ distinct from ‘Wolf Man,’ could potentially thrive given the current scarcity of kid-friendly films in cinemas. It’s been quite some time since ‘The Lion King’ (Mufasa), ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3,’ and ‘Moana 2’ graced our screens, and while these movies have managed to hold onto top positions in domestic box office charts, theater owners often express a need for more novel choices when it comes to family-friendly films. ‘Dog Man,’ based on Dav Pilkey’s popular children’s graphic novels, has a budget of $40 million and tells the story of a human cop who is merged with his canine partner following an on-duty injury, with Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, and Isla Fisher lending their voices to the characters.

This coming weekend, the R-rated satirical sci-fi thriller “Companion” produced by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema aims to collect between $8 million and $10 million in its domestic premiere across 2,750 theaters. Additionally, it’s projected to earn another $5 million at international box offices. With strong reviews (the film boasts a commendable 93% on Rotten Tomatoes), “Companion” may spark the buzz that typically fuels a late-January surprise hit. The movie, which has a production budget of $10 million excluding marketing costs, seems to be on track for a profitable run at the box office. Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid star in this film, where a group of friends embark on a weekend trip into the woods, only for their peaceful retreat to turn into turmoil when they discover one of the guests is actually a companion robot.

The movies ‘Dog Man’ and ‘Companion’ might help melt the cold at the winter box office, but it’s not until Disney and Marvel’s ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ premieres on February 14 that we can expect a surge in attendance. Sam Wilson is set to save the day!
