Panther” under Lionsgate’s label. On its premiere day, this crime sequel raked in approximately $5.8 million from 3,008 theaters across the country, securing the number one spot on domestic box office charts.
The new film is slightly outpacing the initial release of “Den of Thieves,” which STX Entertainment debuted in January 2018, earning $5.6 million on its opening day and a total of $15.2 million over three days. This will mark Lionsgate’s first box office topper since “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” premiered in November 2023.
Although “Pantera” isn’t experiencing a substantial increase compared to its previous version, Lionsgate anticipates that the film will remain a consistent attraction during the usually slow moviegoing month of January. The sequel was made with a relatively low budget of $40 million, and the studio often offsets financial risks by selling foreign rights for their films before they are released. While reviews have been somewhat mixed (though generally more positive than the initial release), “Pantera” appears to be meeting expectations for early viewers, receiving a B+ grade from Cinema Score pollster.
Christian Gudegast is back on board for “Pantera,” where Gerard Butler takes up the character of Big Nick once more, this time playing a Los Angeles police officer who switches continents to pursue the criminal mastermind Donnie (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) across Europe.
Generally speaking, this weekend is relatively calm for exhibitors, with some residual effects from the holiday season boosting business. However, the ongoing wildfires in the Los Angeles region have forced several local cinemas to close temporarily, affecting movie-watching in one of the United States’ major markets.
This weekend, the quirky Robbie Williams biography “Better Man” will be shown at 1,291 different locations. However, its opening day earnings of $580,000 are relatively modest compared to some blockbusters, as Paramount Pictures acquired it for North American distribution rights at a price tag of $25 million.
Directed by “Greatest Showman’s” Michael Gracy, the film “Better Man” received positive feedback during fall festivals, primarily due to its unique concept of portraying Williams through a CGI chimpanzee. According to Williams himself in the trailer, he has often felt like he is “less evolved than others.” However, the movie failed to perform well in its limited release towards the end of December and has since lost momentum among potential Oscar nominees. Despite being a British cultural icon, Williams has largely remained unknown in the U.S., and a domestic marketing strategy that focused more on the chimpanzee aspect rather than the central pop star didn’t resonate.
Meanwhile, Disney’s film “Mufasa: The Lion King” is expected to move into second place after earning approximately $2.8 million on Friday. This photorealistic CGI prequel is projected to bring in around $12.1 million in its fourth week of release, pushing its domestic total north of $187 million. Despite a slow start, “Mufasa” should soon surpass films like “Kung Fu Panda 4” ($193 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($196 million) to become one of the top 10 highest-grossing North American releases of 2024.
In simpler terms, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” from Paramount is expected to earn around $8.6 million in its fourth week, which represents a 59% decrease compared to its previous performance. By the end of this weekend, the total domestic earnings for this latest Sonic adventure should exceed $200 million. Only eight other movies scheduled for release in 2024 have managed to reach this milestone so far.
The horror film “Nosferatu,” produced by Focus Features, is still demonstrating its influence as a successful horror release for Universal’s specialty label. In the fourth spot, the remake directed by Robert Eggers is expected to generate approximately $6.3 million in its third weekend, increasing its domestic total to around $81 million.
As a movie critic, I’d say that based on early predictions, “Moana 2” looks set to secure a spot among the top five box office earners following its Friday take of approximately $1.2 million. Now entering its seventh weekend, this captivating animated sequel is nearing the end of its theatrical journey after accumulating an impressive $430 million in North America.
