After a few years and a handover of the shield, Captain America is back.
This weekend, Marvel Studio’s newest adventure titled “Captain America: A New World Order,” which marks the fourth standalone Captain America film, is set to debut in cinemas. It generated a box-office preview total of $12 million on its first day (Thursday).
The fourth installment is projected to earn between $80 million and $85 million over a standard weekend, with potential earnings increasing to $90 million to $95 million during the extended President’s Day weekend. Overseas, it’s anticipated to bring in around $110 million, although this will be overshadowed by “Ne Zha 2” which has already amassed over a billion dollars and counting, as well as “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” which is set for release on Peacock in the US and cinemas internationally. The production and marketing costs of “Brave New World” exceed $180 million.
As a cinephile, I can confidently say that the captivating “Brave New World” is poised to rule the box office this year, surpassing all previous openings so far. In comparison to its fellow movies in the illustrious Marvel series, “Brave New World” is expected to outshine 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” ($65 million opening weekend) and come close to matching 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” ($95 million opening), but it won’t quite reach the staggering heights of 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War” ($179 million opening).
In the latest film, Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson, who was first introduced as the new Captain America in the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, makes his big screen debut. Previously, he played the Falcon in the movies “Captain America” and “Avengers”. With Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers retiring in “Avengers: Endgame”, Mackie now officially steps into the role of Captain America.
In “Brave New World,” Cap finds himself in the center of international turmoil and super-powered commotion thanks to Harrison Ford’s President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who also transforms into the gamma-irradiated Red Hulk. The cast also includes Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson, Giancarlo Esposito and more.
Also opening domestically this weekend is “Paddington in Peru,” the third film in the adorable bear franchise. It made $600,000 in Thursday previews and is on track for $15 million to $17 million over the holiday weekend. It’s already brought in $103 million internationally.
