Box Office: ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Aims for $95 Million Opening Over President’s Day Weekend

Calling Sam Wilson! The movie “Captain America: Brave New World” takes flight in cinemas this weekend, with Marvel’s newest tale aiming to melt some chilly ticket sales.

In “Captain America: Brave New World,” Anthony Mackie’s character as the Avenger inherits the star-spangled shield from Chris Evans’ Captain America, and it is projected to earn between $80 million and $85 million over a typical weekend, with potential earnings of $90 million to $95 million during the President’s Day holiday. This major release, estimated at $200 million, will be shown in around 4,100 theaters across North America.

The movie is projected to earn approximately 110 million dollars more at international cinemas, but it faces competition from “Ne Zha 2” in China, which has already amassed a record-breaking 1.1 billion dollars and continues to grow, as well as “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” which will stream on Peacock in the U.S., but is playing in cinemas everywhere else around the world.

Given that there haven’t been any major domestic releases yet, “Captain America” is expected to have the highest domestic opening of the year. The projected box office earnings for this film fall roughly in the mid-range of post-pandemic showings within Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. These figures surpass the initial ticket sales of 2021’s “Eternals” ($71 million) and “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” ($75 million), as well as 2023’s “The Marvels” ($46 million), which underperformed in comparison to typical MCU performances. However, these numbers are still lower than more successful titles like 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” ($144 million), “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” ($187 million), and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” ($181 million), as well as 2023’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($118 million).

Apart from “Deadpool & Wolverine,” last year’s billion-dollar, R-rated comic book hit with two iconic characters, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been facing difficulties at the box office. The third installment of “Guardians” was successful with $845 million worldwide, but other 2023 releases like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels” were disappointing flops – even rarities in the vast MCU franchise that failed to turn a profit. Superhero movies, once dependable at the box office, have been experiencing a downturn. Marvel Studios has two upcoming blockbusters scheduled over the next couple of months: “Thunderbolts” on May 2 and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” on July 25.

In “Captain America: Brave New World,” we find ourselves continuing the storyline post-Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and movie “Avengers: Endgame.” The previous installments concluded with Steve Rogers stepping back in time and choosing to peacefully age alongside his beloved, relinquishing his superhero responsibilities. Later, Sam Wilson assumes the role as Captain America, only to be drawn into a global crisis when Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (portrayed by Harrison Ford) becomes president of the United States. The film is directed by Julius Onah, who is known for directing “The Cloverfield Paradox.

Not just the cap that’s making its debut at movie theater signs; Sony’s “Paddington in Peru,” which is the third installment of the marmalade-loving bear series, will also premiere this Friday. The film expects to earn between $15 million and $17 million over the long weekend period. It can be found on around 3,700 screens across North America.

As a movie reviewer, I’ve just returned from the global premiere of “Paddington 3”, and let me tell you, it’s already making waves at the international box office, amassing an impressive $103 million so far! Interestingly, the earlier installments in the “Paddington” franchise, inspired by the beloved children’s series penned by British author Michael Bond, have seen greater commercial triumphs overseas. If the initial buzz is anything to go by, it seems that this trend is set to continue with the third outing of our beloved Peruvian bear.

Previously directed by Paul King across the first two films, the directing reigns were handed over to Dougal Wilson for his first full-length directorial endeavor. In this latest installment, our beloved Paddington (voice by Ben Whishaw) embarks on an adventure that finds him journeying to Peru. This trip is made to visit his dear Aunt Lucy (voice by Imelda Staunton), who now lives in a home for retired bears. The live-action cast includes Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Antonio Banderas, and Olivia Colman, rounding out the ensemble.
