Bowen Yang’s Funniest Day From Wedding Banquet Is NSFW (Not Safe for Weddings)

Certain unforgettable moments from movie sets can transform into legends, even among those who didn’t witness them firsthand. This is particularly true when the moment involves Joan Chen sharing an intimate scene with someone wearing a lion’s head, as was the case during the filming of “The Wedding Banquet.” At the Vulture Spot at Sundance, Bowen Yang revealed that although he wasn’t present on that day, it was still considered the funniest day on set. He recounted, to the amusement of the cast, the tale of Joan Chen allowing a lion-dance lion to nudge her. The crew the following day would share this anecdote as “Joan got rimmed by the lion.” (Fortunately, it appears that this scene did make it into the final version of the film, based on the teaser trailer.)

Director Andrew Ahn is remaking the 1993 film by Ang Lee that was a groundbreaking queer classic. In the new version, Min (played by Han Gi-chan) becomes disillusioned with his boyfriend Chris (Yang), who avoids commitment. To secure a green card and expensive IVF treatments for his friend Angela’s (Kelly Marie Tran) partner Lee (Lily Gladstone), Min proposes marriage to her, but complications arise when Min’s family decides to host an extravagant wedding. Director Ahn shared that this film was the first gay movie he saw as an 8-year-old and had a significant impact on him. He collaborated with original writer James Schamus to create a fresh take on the story, focusing on depicting a contemporary queer family.
