Bowen Yang Is Leaving Saturday Night Live

Some sad news for fans of Saturday Night Live: Bowen Yang will be leaving the show after seven and a half seasons. His final episode will be this weekend’s holiday special, hosted by Ariana Grande with musical guest Cher. It’s fitting that Yang, known for creating the character of the pop music-loving Iceberg, is ending his run on an episode with two major pop stars. During his time on the show, he received four Emmy nominations for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Bowen Yang joined Saturday Night Live as a writer in 2018 and became a featured player the following season. He made history as the first Asian and second openly gay man to be a cast member on the show. Yang quickly became known for his work on “Weekend Update,” creating memorable characters like Chinese trade representative Chen Biao and the Titanic iceberg. He’s also popular for sketches like “Bowen’s Straight,” “Straight Male Friend,” and “Charades with Mom.” Many viewers remember his hilarious portrayal of George Santos, the politician, whom he played as a constant liar and performer.

Bowen Yang has achieved incredible success while still working on Saturday Night Live. His podcast, Las Culturistas, co-hosted with Matt Rogers, has grown from a niche comedy show to a popular mainstream hit, even spawning its own awards show that aired on Bravo this year. He’s also appeared in films like Fire Island and The Wedding Banquet, and had roles in both Wicked movies. Currently, he and Rogers are writing and starring in a film inspired by an episode of the Search Engine podcast, exploring the question of why Chris and Dan were denied entry to Berghain.

Before the start of season 51, Yang explained why he decided to continue with the show. He said he always asks himself if he still has more to contribute, and he felt he did. In a September interview with People, he shared that even Lorne Michaels agreed, telling him he still had important work to do. Yang admitted he’d worried the audience might be tired of seeing him, but Michaels reassured him that wasn’t the case and that his contributions were still needed. Now, however, his time with the show has come to an end.
