After a break, Saturday Night Live is back for its 51st season. However, the show said goodbye to beloved cast member Bowen Yang after the Christmas episode, which was hosted by his Wicked co-star, Ariana Grande. While his departure was emotional, hearing that Yang recently returned to 30 Rock to collect his belongings makes me picture him playfully sneaking around the building.
On a recent episode of his podcast, Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers, Yang shared a story about having to go back to 30 Rock to retrieve some belongings. Unfortunately, he chose a terrible time to visit – right when everyone was returning to work after a break. He ended up having to sneak around, probably to avoid causing a scene, and I’d love to see the security camera footage of the whole thing!
I just finished my last day at SNL. I had to quietly slip into my dressing room to pack up my things before everyone returned from break. The team is heading back to work today to start planning the next show, and I wanted to clear out all my accumulated stuff – lots of great memories and keepsakes – before they did.
I can’t help but picture him tiptoeing around 30 Rock like he’s in a spy film, carefully avoiding any noise or attention – it’s hilarious! I wish I could have been there to see it, especially when Yang emerged from the hair department with a mold of his own head! He even shared a photo of it on the podcast, along with a lovely note from hairstylist Jodi Mancuso.
Yang joked that he’d use it as a hat stand, and Rogers suggested he might borrow it again if he ever hosts the show. While they were teasing each other, it likely wasn’t easy for Yang to clear out his dressing room. Former SNL cast member and Las Culturistas guest Kristen Wiig understands what he’s going through.
I understand how difficult it is to clear out a space. Cleaning my office was tough because it’s hard to ask for help when others aren’t around. You end up handling everything yourself, and it feels like saying goodbye to the whole place.
Over the years, many cast members have left Saturday Night Live, and it seems like their experiences are often quite similar, regardless of how long they were on the show. In fact, a lot of former cast members return to host or make guest appearances, so it’s likely Yang will be back at Studio 8H someday – maybe even with his famous wig mold! He’s definitely not the only one who’s found ways to stay connected to the show after leaving.
After his last episode, many of his fellow cast members from Saturday Night Live paid tribute to Yang, especially after a particularly moving final sketch. Yang is one of six cast members who have left the show recently, joining Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker, and Emil Wakim. Now that he’s officially moved on from 30 Rock, he likely needs some time to adjust to life after SNL and won’t be rushing back for a guest appearance or to host. However, he’s expressed his appreciation for the show, so it’s possible he might return sooner than people think.
