Okay, so being a Borderlands player, I knew Borderlands 4 was gonna have some talkative gear. Remember The Bane in Borderlands 2? That gun wouldn’t stop yelling! And then there was The Unkempt Harold in 3, cracking weird jokes all the time. Well, this time around, there’s a legendary shield called Cindershelly, and let’s just say it… talks a lot, and it’s kinda intense. Apparently, the developers at Gearbox didn’t quite realize how often they’d programmed it to spout off, so it’s been a bit more… vocal than they intended!
So, Borderlands 4 got a big update on October 23rd, and along with a Halloween event, they quietly tweaked something that was seriously bugging players – Cindershelly’s voice lines. This shield… well, let’s just say it was very flirty and constantly making suggestive comments. It got to the point where it felt like I was being hit on constantly while I was just trying to play the game! The update doesn’t make her silent, but she won’t talk as much, which is a huge relief. It was a weird issue, but they addressed it, and honestly, good riddance to all that constant catcalling!
PC Gamer pointed out that some of the character’s voice lines were excessively suggestive. For example, Cindershelly would say things like “Touch that barrel and scream for me” and “Don’t stop till I allow it.” The legendary shield continued with similarly provocative lines, such as “Show me how close you can get, worm,” and “Worship me.” What made it even more noticeable was that these lines played frequently during combat – every time the player dealt or received damage, which is constant in a Borderlands game.
The Cindershelly shield was created by The Order, who make weapons for The Timekeeper’s army. Like most items in Borderlands 4, it’s found randomly, but you have a better chance of getting it from The Backhive in the Auger Mine, located in The Fadefields of the Dissected Plateau. This shield reduces incoming damage and, when destroyed, releases a damaging area-of-effect blast that scales with your Resolve. Plus, a recent update means it won’t taunt you with suggestive comments as often – if that was something you enjoyed!
Cindershelly isn’t the first character in the Borderlands series with overtly sexualized dialogue. Borderlands 2 featured Hot Mama, a sniper who, similar to Cindershelly’s shield in the upcoming game, made suggestive comments while players were fighting enemies. It seems the series is continuing this trend.
Borderlands 4 is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. While a version for the new Nintendo Switch 2 is planned, its release date has been delayed from October 3rd. Gearbox Software wants to make sure the Switch 2 version is up to their quality standards before releasing it.
